Survey says: BlackBerry is king

Honestly, we don’t need a survey to tell us that the BlackBerry is the superior smart phone on the market. We’ve tried the Palm, we’ve tried the Q, and we’ve tried the N95. Yet nothing really touches the overall functionality of the BlackBerry. However, when a survey does come out that tells us what we already know, we like to pass it along. After all, everyone needs their opinions validated from time to time.

ChangeWave is a company that conducts surveys. At regular intervals, they survey the smart phone landscape. There have been five such surveys since June of 2006, and BlackBerry has grown 8 percent in that time, from 30 to 38 percent. Go BlackBerry! Another part of the survey asked what smart phone people planed on buying. BlackBerry won out here, too, taking 33 percent of the vote.

On the flip side, the Palm Treo has gone from 36 percent of smart phones in June of 2006 to just 23 percent in July of 2007. They’ve lost ground in every single survey. They continue to lose ground in people’s planned purchases, too, registering just a 9 percent response rate.

The most interesting aspect of this is the iPhone. The survey was conducted less than a month into the phone’s existence, yet 4 percent of respondents claimed to have owned an iPhone. This puts it just one percent behind the Samsung BlackJack and the Nokia N95, and just three percent behind the Motorola Q. Not bad for the newbie. The iPhone also ranked second in planned purchases at 18 percent, doubling that of the third place finisher, the Palm Treo.

Note, however, that in the April 2007 survey, 26 percent of respondents said they planned to purchase the iPhone.

Congratulations, Research in Motion. You’re still king, and it looks to stay that way for many years to come. Cheers.
