According to an independent survey, transferring and syncing data from your computer to your smartphone is fastest handled by the BlackBerry. This test pitted the BlackBerry 8120 (pretty much the 8130 in the U.S.) against the iPhone, the Sony Ericsson Walkman, and the Motorola Razr 2. Tests were conducted with file transfer software included with the phones and via direct file transfer. And in the end, the winner was the 8120.
Transferred in the test were a full-length CD, a TV episode, and a movie. So why was the BB able to move these files faster than the other phones?
The device behind the BlackBerry’s fast transfer rates is the Cypress CYWB0124AB west bridge peripheral controller. West bridge products directly connect peripherals, creating fast transfer tunnels without loading the main processor. Instead of routing files from the computer through the phone processor to the storage device, the west bridge sets up a tunnel running from the computer directly to the storage device.
The final tallies were as follows, for transferring four gigabytes:
iPhone: 23 minutes
BB (via media manager): 6 minutes
BB (via direct transfer): 5 minutes
Walkman (via direct transfer): 210 minutes
Walkman (via external memory card reader): 15 minutes
Razr: 19 minutes
So it’s really not even close. This makes the BlackBerry the best device for people who like to change content often. And since many of these smartphones have a limited amount of memory (even the 8 GB iPhone isn’t really a lot of storage by modern standards), we figure that the content would change frequently.
