If there’s a survey, J.D. Power and Associates conducts it. They come in all shapes and sizes, but the one we’re concerned with today is the Business Wireless Smartphone Customer Satisfaction Survey for 2007. Yes, the BlackBerry won. The rankings were based on the following areas: ease of operation (22 percent), operating system (21 percent), physical design (20 percent), audio (14 percent), batter aspects (13 percent), and utility features (10 percent).
RIM ranks highest in overall smartphone customer satisfaction with a score of 702 points on a 1,000-point scale, performing particularly well in the operating system factor, which includes the speed of moving between applications and speed of sending/receiving e-mails. RIM also performs particularly well in battery aspects, including the length of battery life. Treo manufacturer Palm (698) and Samsung (698) tie to closely follow RIM in the ranking.
So it wasn’t a landslide or anything, which makes sense. We’re actually fans of the Palm Treo (we’re not traitors, we swear!) and it’s touch-screen interface. And most every Treo user we’ve spoken to is delighted with his or her phone. We’ve never used the Samsung BlackJack, but a friend of ours who has it on AT&T’s 3G network raves about its functionality.
The study finds that satisfaction is critical to future sales and profitability of smartphone manufacturers, as highly satisfied owners are more than 50 percent more likely to repurchase the same brand than those who are not satisfied with their smartphone. Additionally, owners who are “delighted” with their smartphone are 80 percent more likely to recommend a particular brand than an unsatisfied owner.
So here’s to Research In Motion. We wonder if the iPhone will be included in next year’s survey.
