It feels like a while since the last time we put up three BlackBerry themes for review, but no, it was two weeks ago, just like every other time. This time we’re not going with any particular theme to the theme reviews. Instead we’ve got a smorgasbord: one for the Bold, one for the Curve running 4.5, and one for basically every BlackBerry model. We’re including one from Hedone Design, one that goes along with a current trend on BBGeeks, and we’ll finish off with the theme I’ve been using since October.
TweetBerry
We’ve covered BlackBerry and Twitter pretty extensively here on BBGeeks, and that’s not going to end any time soon. It started a year and change ago, with our TwitterBerry review — which, we know, is due for an upgrade. More recently we’ve reviewed UberTwitter (which we’ll change to match the new format), Twibble, and Tiny Twitter. It only makes sense, then, that we take a look at TweetBerry, a Twitter-based theme for the BlackBerry Bold.
The theme features the signature Twitter sky blue throughout. This includes the background and, in various shades, just about every available icon. The Home Screen is rather simple, with the Twitter Bird hovering above the battery indicator — in percentages, which some might find useful. It also contains six icons of your choosing. The Applications Menu might get a bit frustrating for some users, since all of the icons are shades of blue. The icons are still distinctive, though, so it’s not a huge issue. Other than that, everything is straight forward. I just hope you enjoy seeing lots and lots of light blue.
If you’re a BlackBerry Bold user and want to get the TweetBerry theme, you can nab it from Themes4BB for $2.99, down from $5.99. No idea how long that price will last, though.
FutureX
Hedone Design makes regular appearances in Theme Review Wednesdays. They keep pumping them out, and they’re almost always good. Their newest theme, FutureX, is no exception. In describing why they made this particular theme, Hedone explains “How to get more than 10 buttons on home screen without animation that will slow down your BlackBerry and still get theme to be wallpaper friendly?!” It doesn’t sound like an easy task, but those guys are always up to the challenge.
They describe the theme — for the Bold, Storm, and Curve 8900 versions — as 15 in 3. On the Home Screen you’ll see just three icons. Seems kind of skimpy, right? Ah ha, this is where Hedone comes in. Each of those three icons is expandable into a five-icon bar which stretches the middle of the screen. So there you have it. Fifteen icons on the main screen without resource-intensive animations and without making it look like a normal icon theme. It makes for an excellent theme all around.
You can get the FutureX theme for $6.99. You can get it for just about any BlackBerry running OS 4.5, but note that anything below OS 4.6 will not have the 15 in 3 feature. It will just be five icons on the home screen. Bummer.
Storm Dock Bottom Zen Today Plus
Back when I got my BlackBerry 8830, I changed the theme constantly. When we wrote up the free BlackBerry themes article, I checked out as many as I could. Hence, I understand when people continue to do that. Yet, in my advanced BlackBerry age, I’ve settled in on a theme that works for me. Gone are the days of promiscuity. I’m a one-theme kinda guy right now. It’s the Storm Dock Bottom Zen Today Plus, a big name for a pretty basic theme.
First off, it is Today Plus, which is my favorite feature for pre-4.6 models (and my favorite feature on those models is the rollover Today Plus). New calendar items pop right up, so I don’t have to go in and check what’s on the agenda for the day. Ditto messages. They’re right there for me, and it makes life just a little easier. Then there are two rows of six icons each, meaning not only do I get my messages and calendar events on the Home Screen, but I also get 12 different icons. Clicking into the Applications Menu is a rarity these days.
You can get the Storm Dock Bottom Zen Today Plus theme at the BBGeeks Store for $6.99. You’ll need a Cuve running OS 4.5 to get it.
