How many BlackBerry themes have you used in the past year? Do you use the same theme for a while and then switch? Do you rotate between a handful of themes? Either way, there are plenty of options to choose from, and it’s our goal to highlight the very best with our bi-weekly feature. These theme designers work hard to provide functional, attractive themes. So if you’ve been stuck on your current theme for a while and want to change the way your Berry looks, check out our crop of three — or, really, any set of BlackBerry theme reviews we’ve done.
Rollin’
I love kicking off a TRW with one from Hedone design. They’re by far the most-reviewed outlet here, and for good reason. They create visually pleasing themes that offer plenty of functionality. Sometimes that’s basic functionality wrapped in pretty wrapping paper, and other times it’s a uniquely functional theme — such as their 9 in 3 scheme with TPXpert. Their latest theme, Rollin’, is as impressive as their others.
The color scheme is reminiscent of the 70s, a teal-orange-yellow-brown feel that comes together with the VW Beetle in the middle of the screen. Overall, the theme is more form than function. It features just three customizable home screen icons, while previous Hedone themes have featured a dozen or more. That doesn’t mean there aren’t room for goodies, though. The network, signal, battery life, date, and time are all set up on a street sign. The icons are all a bit different, mostly white and black inside the teal circles (orange when highlighted). The font is different, but very readable.
You can get the Rollin’ theme, on any OS 4.5 and higher, for $3.99 until October 10. In case you’re interested, they’ve also updated their Simple theme, for the Storm and 8300 series.
El Dia de los Muertos
After going through Hedone’s theme, I figured we should take a stop by Cherri Chiodo’s site to see what she has brewing. I’ve missed a few of her themes, so instead of reviewing just the latest, I’ve gone into her September archive and found a pretty killer theme: El Dia de los Muertos — which, for those who no habla Espanol, that’s Spanish for “The day of the Muertos.” (Sorry, that joke might have gone over everyone’s head — it’s “day of the dead.”)
Like almost all of Cherri’s themes, this one features vibrant colors and a usable design. The skull in front of the candles, pictured to the left, is simply a killer lock screen image. A similar one appears — with roses in its eyes — on the Home Screen. Four customizable icons run up each side of the screen. The icons themselves are pretty basic, but they all fir the color scheme. The font — an issue I’ve complained about in the past and which Cherri has addressed — is a bit much, but it’s only for the dialog text. For your messages and all other long-form text, it’s a pretty basic font. So a big plus for that.
You can get the Day of the Dead theme for $7.99. that’s a link for the Bold 9000 version. You can also get it for the 8300 series and many others.
Equilibrium
We round out our regular stable of theme developers with Themes4bb. It seems every time I stop by there, there are four or five really cool themes on the main page. I skipped over a few of them, including a curiously pink NFL theme, in favor of Equilibrium. Maybe it’s just because of the movie of the same title. Anyway, the Equilibrium theme is sharp and icon-heavy. That’s what we love in a theme here at BBGeeks.
One thing it’s missing is a Today preview, but that’s not the biggest deal. Equilibrium makes up for it by having a dozen Home Screen icons — though only eight on the Storm version. . They’re wrapped around a sharp looking image, which includes the network status/signal, battery meter, and a digital-style clock. The Applications Menu is also pretty basic, with the icons lined up over the background image, which is a bit faded so that there are no blending issues with the icons.
You can get the Equilibrium theme at Themes4bb for $4.50. That’s the price for the Bold, 8900, and Storm versions. The Tour version is $5, and the Curve 85xx version is $4.99.
