Theme Review Wednesdays: Halloween edition

Posted by Joe on October 21, 2009

Since this will be our last theme review feature before Halloween, we’ll highlight a troika of spooky BlackBerry themes. It’s also good that we do this early because, really, who wants a Halloween theme the day before? If you’re into the kinda-sorta-but-not-really-a-holiday, you probably want that theme for a few weeks. In fact, you might already have a Halloween theme loaded up. Maybe you’ll find a cooler one here. In fact, since we’re leading with Hedone Design, I bet you do.

Hedone’s Halloween

There are so many Halloween themes filled with grinning pumpkins and spooky fonts, but that’s not the case with Hedone Design’s take on the theme. This one is sleek and original, with more of a Tim Burton feel than a a traditional pop Halloween look. That’s A+ in my book. That there are more colors than just black, white, and orange is even better.

The Home Screen features five vertical pictures, all of which are customizable icons. They’ll be tough to recognize, of course, but there’s a handy text indicator just below each. The battery meter, tucked away in the lower right corner, is a spider web, and the signal meter is measured by a colony of bats. The Applications Menu is straight forward, featuring gray icons on a black background, with an orange burst when highlighted.

You can get the Hedone Halloween theme at their theme store for half off the normal $6.99 tag, from now through October 22. Just click that link, and when purchasing the theme make sure to enter the promotional code HD50BDAY09. After October 22 it will go back up to $6.99, so you can nab it at the BBGeeks Store.

Spooked Out

In our last theme review article, we covered Cherri Chiodo’s Day Of The Dead theme. It was vibrant with color, in the typical Cherri fashion that we’ve come to know and adore. But sometimes, you just need something a bit more…badass. Yes, I believe that’s the exact word I’m looking for. Thankfully, Cherri has created a few Halloween themes, and this week we’ll take a look at my favorite one, Spooked Out.

What I love about the theme is that it’s all black and white. Call me old fashioned, but the monochrome display just feels more dramatic — especially in HD, which is strange, because color is supposed to look better in HD. The monochrome style works especially well with this theme, and it’s evident by the skull and crossbones that haunts the center of the screen. Two columns of four icons each surround the jolly roger, as do all of the signal indicators. The Applications Menu features more monochrome icons in front of a castle and graveyard silhouette background.

(In fact, the only downside of the theme is that the Bluetooth indicator and red new message asterisk are in color. Even the email envelope icon is gray.)

Unfortunately, the theme is only available for limited devices. You can get it for the 8900, Bold 9000, Storm, and Tour for just $3 until November 1.

Halloween Theme

I realize that some people like pop Halloween decorations, so we’ll close this theme review with a more traditional one. Matt Ginsberg created a theme that incorporates a number of images and icons to create a Halloween feel. It starts off strong, with a silhouetted witch flying on her broomstick. It doesn’t get any more Halloween than that.

The Home Screen features the image, plus six customizable icons, all of which are Halloween related: ghosts, pumpkins, and skulls. All of the icons, even those in the Applications Menu, are Halloween-related, so you’ll need the help of the text indicator. Unfortunately, the text is in a crazy font, not something I’m a fan of. It does fit the theme, though. The calling screen, incoming call screen, and lock screen feature different Halloween images. My favorite is the incoming call screen, which features various jack-o-lanterns.

You can get the Halloween Theme at the BBGeeks Store for just $2.50. That’s a link for the Bold version. You can also get it for the Curve, the 8900, and the Pearl.
