Theme Review Wednesdays: Crimson, In Words, Mac OSX Mini

Posted by Joe on September 23, 2009

This week I decided to check out what themes some other BlackBerry blogs were featuring. I hit upon a pretty good lot. It actually took a little time to whittle them down to three. And then, of course, I found a killer theme on Themes4bb, and I just couldn’t pass it up. So there are two themes which were featured this week on other BlackBerry blogs, and then the one from Themes4bb. It promises to be quite a theme exploration.

Crimson

This one comes from the fine folks at BerryReporter. It’s called Crimson, and it’s one mean looking theme. Featuring a black jolly roger on a red background, the theme is as sharp as they come. For the aesthetically-minded BlackBerry theme user, it gets a high recommendation.

In terms of functionality, the theme is pretty basic. This is no knock: there are so many nonfunctional themes out there that we really do appreciate the simple ones. All of the icons fit in with the black and red scheme. It’s clear that visual pleasure is the foremost concern with this theme.

You can get the Crimson theme at the BBGeeks Store for $3.95 until September 25. After that it’s back up to its regular $4.95 price. Crimson is available for OS 4.5 and up.

In Words

The boys at BlackBerry Cool pointed me to this theme, and I have to say, it’s gaining consideration to be my theme for a while. Called In Words, the theme fits right with its title. Rather than the traditional icon, In Words goes with a complete textual interface. You’ll never confuse icons again.

While the theme is minimalist, it is also elegant. The black and white theme is easy on the eyes, even with the tiger on the wallpaper. I do like the text in place of the icons — it’s just easier to scroll around and see exactly what you want, rather than the icon for it. The theme features 12 icons on the Home Screen, plus a hidden menu with four more. The only downside I can see is that there’s not really room to change the wallpaper. If it’s not on a white background, the text won’t display properly.

You can get the In Words theme from the BBGeeks Store for $5. It is compatible with OS 4.6 and 4.7.

Mac OSX Mini

We’ve reviewed an OSX style theme before, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do another. This one comes from Themes4bb, and it’s the Mac OSX Mini theme. It’s quite like the OSXLike theme from Hedone, but it’s a bit more visually pleasing. That’s probably because of the default wallpaper, a cosmic scene that I can’t seem to take my eyes off.

Surprisingly, this is the only theme reviewed this week with the Today preview. Scroll over the calendar icon, which is the iCal one, for calendar events, and the messages one, the stamp, for messages. The theme features room for 11 icons on the Home Screen and is, as always, fully customizable. The Mac icons are always a nice touch.

You can get the OSX Mini theme at Themes4bb for $5.99. It is compatible with the Curve 8900, Bold, and Tour. Sorry, Storm users.
