We’re going with a theme for this week’s theme review feature: 2009 movies. We’ll go with one released earlier this year, one currently in theaters, and one slated for later this summer. The idea actually comes from Themes4bb, who sent us a theme for the upcoming G.I. Joe movie. So we looked for some other movie themes, and came up with two others: Wolverine (though the theme isn’t geared towards the movie) and Watchmen. After the jump we’ll dive into these blockbusters.
Cobra
The hype for the GI Joe movie is growing, and it will only get heavier between now and its August release. In advance of this, Drip from Themes4bb has developed a Storm theme in its honor. This theme holds a special place in my heart, but not because of the movie. Just as Drip describes, I, too, used to rush home to watch Transformers and GI Joe. That, plus He-Man and Thundercats, were the basis for my youth.
The theme is a pretty basic one for the Storm. It features the calendar on teh main page, plus four dock icons. The top bar is pretty busy, featuring all the standard logos, gauges, and profiles icon. The best part, of course, is the Cobra logo which sits in the background. While the calendar items lay over the logo, they don’t seem to blend too much, so there’s no issue reading the text. As with most Applications Menus in newer themes, the icons are in boxes and are clearly laid over the logo. In other words, it’s a clean, crisp theme ready for nostalgic GI Joe fans.
You can get the Cobra theme at the BBGeeks Store for $3.99. This comes in a bit cheaper than most of the themes we review, which usually check in at $7. If you’re a fan of GI Joe and have a Storm, it’s definitely worth a look.
Wolverine
While GI Joe was a big part of my younger years, once I got into third and fourth grades, comic books took over for cartoons. That meant reading the adventures of Cyclops, Gambit, Wolverine, and all the X-Men. The latest movie from the series is X-Men Origins: Wolverine. In Logan’s honor, we’ll feature an OS 4.6 theme with is likeness, though not in association with the movie. Still, it’s a nice throwback for X-Men fans.
The Home Screen is killer, with a drawing of Wolverine brandishing his claws. Surrounding him are seven icons in an L shape. The Applications Menu looks futuristic, with metallic-looking boxes running throughout the screen. That doesn’t even cover the coolest part, though. The call screen features another drawing of Logan, this one with a bit more action. He looks, uh, a little peeved. The incoming call screen has a stoic-looking Wolvie in full costume, and the lock screen is black and white, with a different-style drawing. This theme combines the best of both worlds with function and form. It’s aesthetically pleasing while getting the job done with ease.
You can get the Wolverine theme at the BBGeeks Store for free. Yes, we usually feature premium themes, but this one fit way too well with this week’s overall theme. Remember, it’s for OS 4.6.
Watchmen
While I spent my preadolescent years engrossed with the X-Men, it wasn’t until much, much later that I got into Alan Moore’s Watchmen. Once I got into it, though, there was no prying me from it. It’s one of those comics you can read again and again, and it keep getting better because you notice something new every time. I went to a 4 a.m. showing of the movie, but in the interest of not setting a negative tone I’ll avoid sharing my thoughts on it.
The theme, though is pretty cool. It’s a TodayPlus, an instant plus in my book. The Home Screen features the Watchmen logo, plus The Comedian’s smiley face. The text lays right over the logo, which is another plus. However, once we get into the Applications Menu, there’s a bit of blending. It’s not bad, but couple of the icons don’t sit atop the logo very well. I’ve seen worse. Plus, the smiley face logo acts as the new message indicator, so that makes up for it. The incoming call screen features Dr. Manhattan, and best of all the lock screen features a from-behind shot of Rorschach. Hurm.
Like the Wolverine theme, you can get the Watchmen theme for free at the BBGeeks Store. I promise, it’s better than the movie.
