Geek Review: Real iBerry Block Custom L Theme for the Bold

Posted by Cooper on October 9, 2008

So you have downloaded some themes for you Curve or your Pearl and you have loved the variations of display made available to you by folks like CherriChiodo, Blueroom and GadgetBean. They have all truly stepped up to the plate when it comes to designing functional alternatives to the themes that ship default with your device. The problem you face now is that you have just upgraded your device to the new BlackBerry Bold and none of the themes you have grown to love are available yet. So what do you do?

Download the new Real iBerry Blocks Custom L Theme for Your Bold

For the time being there are only a limited amount of themes available for your BlackBerry Bold. One of the most recent being the Real iBerry Blocks Custom L theme by GadgetBean.

This theme has been around a while for the older BlackBerry devices and has now received an upgrade worthy of the ground breaking Bold. Lets dig in and see what kind of goodies the Bold version has.

Real iBerry Blocks Custom L Theme for the Bold Interface

First things first, this theme looks amazing. There has clearly been a lot of time spent sprucing up the on screen icons so they take advantage of the Bold’s higher resolution capabilities. Each icon is crystal clear with subtle rollover effects that clearly indicate where you are on the screen while hovering by maintaining the glowing bounding box. I am liking this already, although I would have like to see the “flash and fade” effect carried over from the default themes.

While the default Bold icons are pretty slick in their own right, the iBerry blocks give the navigation a more solid look and feel which is a welcome change.

The fonts used in this theme are smaller than the default font, but still easily legible at a glance. The grey text on the black background is easy on the eyes and did not take long to get used to.

Navigation and Functionality of the Real iBerry Blocks Custom L Theme for the Bold

The Custom L theme shows 6 icons on the home screen along with your calendar and any unread messages you may have received. This is quite handy and a welcome feature that has come to be expected by any theme that intends to be taken seriously. Also on the home screen and easily identifiable are the missed call icon, volume indicator, time, date and standard header info containing carrier, battery level and network information.

One great thing carried over from the previous version of the theme is that all the extra icons (eg. alarm) are small and less emphasized than on many other available themes. This helps to maintain a focus on the inportant onscreen data and makes for easy information recognition at a glance.

Pressing the application button will take you to the rest of your application icons which are displayed six across and look just as good as the icons on the home screen. Scrolling through these additional icons is smooth and each one responds exactly as you would assume they would.

3rd Party Icons

One of the things I did notice and which was mentioned in a previous review of the iBerry Blocks theme for other devices was the fact that third party applications did not get the bounding box upon rollover that the standard icons got. This was either an oversight or not possible at the time, but it made them look cheaper when viewed beside the fully functional rollovers of the standard icons.

In the new release for the Bold this has been addressed and all icons receive the same treatment upon rollover.

Overall, I think this is a slick looking theme for your new BlackBerry Bold and for $7 it is well worth the price. Go ahead and download the Real iBerry Blocks Custom L Theme for the Bold and impress your friends with your slick new stylings.

The Real iBerry Blocks Custom L Theme for the Bold can be purchased from the BBGeeks Store here.

UPDATE: It has just been brought to my attention that there is an alternate version of the Real iBerry Blocks Custom L theme that goes by the name of Animated Drops. The price tag is the same but there is a cool ripple effect underneath the docked icons on your main screen.

This is a great addition to the above mentioned features and definitely worth checking out.

The animated Drops version of the Custom L theme can be purchased from our store here.
