Today we are going to take a look at a really great game for your BlackBerry. The game is Big Kahuna Words and it is tons of fun to play. The overall goal for you as a player is to form words from letters on tiles that are surrounding individual stones that also have letters on them. The concept is simple, break all of the stones that contain letters in order to clear the level.
From the minute you first dive into Big Kahuna Words, you will be strategizing on how to build the biggest words and clear the boards as fast as possible. With the inclusion of special wild cards and other unique game modifiers, Big Kahuna Words is sure to stick around once you have added it to your BlackBerry.
Big Kahuna Words is available through Bplay for $7.99.
Play Options
The objective here is to break all the stones in each level by forming words of three letters or more. These can be in a straight line or on a diagonal. Each letter of a completed word will break a stone and help you progress to the next world.
When playing Big Kahuna Words, you have two different options made available to you:
- Relaxed: Take your time and think about your next move. In relaxed mode you can make longer words and plan your strategy to gain maximum results.
- Action: No time to think. Create words as fast as you can to break the stones and clear the world.
With each word you build, your Tiki Totem will rise. Building longer words will help your Tiki Totem grow at a faster pace. When your Tiki Totem hits 100 (and every 100 thereafter) you will be given 3 wild cards. These wild cards are scattered around the world and can help you put together words and score some sweet points.
Hint: Try adding a bomb blast into your combo when spelling a word. Your Tiki Totem will grow much quicker.
Special Tiles:
There are a couple special tiles that are presented to you during gameplay. These include: Green Stars, Green Star Bombs (6 types), Metal Tiles, and Double Lock Stones.
Green Stars: Green Stars are wild cards that can be used as a substitute for any letter you may need in your word.
Green Star Bomb: The Green Star Bomb is a wild card that has an explosive in it. When you use this type of card as a letter and then complete a word, the explosive will blow up and clear a layer of stones with it. There are 6 types of Green Star Bombs available in Big Kahuna Words. They range from a stick of dynamite all the way up to a full scale nuclear blast!
Metal Tiles: The Metal Tiles are locks. These prevent you from swapping out the letter on the block for another that might be more helpful with building your word. To get rid of these Metal Tiles, simply make a word that starts with the letter contained within, or just blow it up.
Double Lock Stones: These are stones which appear to be riveted in place and will require you to use the letter in a word to reveal the stone and then to use the same letter again in a second word to break the stone.
Special features:
Bonus Word: For each level of the game, there is a Bonus Word. This word is displayed at the bottom of your screen during game play. If you spell the word, you will get 400 points. If you spell it a second time, you will get yourself a cool new Green Star Bomb!
Icon Color: While creating a word, you will notice an icon glowing beside your letters at the bottom of the screen. Keep an eye on the icon to see what color it is glowing.
Green: The letters you have selected form a word.
White: There is no word, but the letters can be rearranged to form a word.
Red: It is not possible to create a word from the selected letters.
Volcano Shuffle: If you find yourself stuck at any point, you can tell the game to do a volcano shuffle. All the current letters will be “spewed” and you will get a whole new batch. A volcano shuffle can be performed once every minute if you like. If you are playing in Action mode, performing a volcano shuffle takes 30 seconds off of your remaining time.
My Impressions
Overall, this game is a solid offering. I have downloaded countless games to my BlackBerry over the last few months and this is one of the only ones so far to provide a challenge and, more importantly, keep me interested long enough to want to conquer it.
The graphics in Big Kahuna Words are very well done. It is easy to tell that the people behind its creation took their time and cared about producing a quality product. With smooth menu animation and decent sound effects, partnered with bonuses and multiple game play modes, Big Kahuna Words is definitely a keeper.
