Research In Motion to Hallmark: Valentine’s Day isn’t just about you anymore. The Canadian BlackBerry maker has announced that they’ll launch two new colors of the Pearl 8130 in time for Valentine’s Day: red and pink. The red goes to Sprint, and the pink goes to Verizon. While it sounds like a nifty idea, and while it capitalizes on a heavy marketing segment, I have to wonder how much sense this makes. Clearly, Sprint got the better of the deal.

How many boys and men do you know who would buy a pink phone? The number has to remarkably close to, if not exactly zero. And how many men do you know who would purchase a red phone? Maybe not a ton, but certainly more than pink. Exponentially more.

Do women, though, place more value on pink phones than red ones? A few of my friends snatched up the pink Motorola RAZRs when they first came out, even though they didn’t like the phone itself. So it would stand to reason that Verizon hits an almost strictly female demographic by offering the pink Pearl.

On the other hand, does the red one have any gender appeal? I’m not sure on that one, though I know as a guy I’d be reluctant to carry a red phone. Not for image reasons, really. I just think they’re kinda gaudy. Gimme my black and/or silver phone and we’ll be fine.
