Monday — just Monday! — we were talking about T-Mobile’s February 18 release date for the Pearl 8120. So color us surprised today when we found out that you can get one of them today. We raised an eyebrow at this one, but calmed down once we realized that T-Mobile is working on finalizing a purchase of SunCom, the company offering the Pearl 8120. It’ll cost you $220 with a contract and rebates. We’re not quite sure if your SunCom contract will be absorbed by T-Mo once the final papers are signed — but we’re sure they’d be glad to take on the remaining year-plus on your contract.
The question is, as always, why? Well, T-Mo does have a ton of 8100 Pearls in stock, in all different colors. We supposed on Monday that they weren’t releasing the 8120 before the holidays so that they could empty their inventory, hence the February 18 release date.
So why not get it out through a subsidiary? SunCom doesn’t have a huge calling area — mostly the Southeastern U.S. So they can let people start salivating over a limited release. The hope is to create a rabid interest in the 8120 prior to its official release through T-Mo.
Not a bad strategy. We’ll be eagerly awaiting the WiFi-fueled device.
