BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8200 Series

After years of success for the original Pearl, RIM released its first follow-up in 2008. It wasn’t exactly the same, though. This version of the Pearl, the 8220, was a flip phone model, the first of its kind for BlackBerry. The screen was a bit improved, measuring 240×320 pixels, as was the internal memory at 128MB. The keyboard remained the same. The device featured WiFi on GSM networks. RIM later released the 8230, a CDMA version of the Pearl flip, which included GPS instead of WiFi.

BlackBerry Pearl 8100 Series

In September 2006, RIM tried something different. All of its previous models had the business user in mind, but their new device was aimed at a more casual audience. It represented many firsts for BlackBerry: the first trackball, the first camera, the first media player. It wasn’t the first to feature a SureType keyboard, but it certainly was the most popular. The screen measures 240×260 pixels. T-Mobile carried the original 8100, and AT&T followed soon after. Then came the follow-ups. The 8110 added GPS, the 8120 added WiFi (but no GPS), and the 8130 had GPS and operated on CDMA networks.

BlackBerry Pearl 3G 9100 Series

In May 2010, RIM finally released a 3G version of its popular Pearl line. In between they launched the flip model, but before that the company hadn’t released a candybar version of the Pearl since early 2008. Beyond the 3G data speeds, RIM made many other upgrades with the 9100. The screen has a higher resolution, 360 x 400, much better than the 240 x 260 pixels of the original Pearl. The processor is a faster 624 MHz, and the internal memory is a greater 256MB. In total, this device is a complete upgrade over the previous models. Faithful Pearl owners will find much joy in the newest version of the device.
