White House aides not taking BlackBerry devices to China

Posted by Joe on August 5, 2008

Yes, the Bold is out in Chile. Anyone wanna road trip to get one? No? Okay. Onto other issues.

While the BlackBerry can be a constant source of enjoyment, it can also be the source of great paranoia. Spying is an issue that many secure organizations, including our government, must deal with. The White House, concerned that the Chinese could pick up confidential communications during the Olympics, has told aides to not take their BlackBerry devices on the trip. The idea is that the Chinese government is using hotels to spy on Internet use.

Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., warned last week that foreign-owned hotels in China face the prospect of “severe retaliation” if they refuse to install government software that can spy on Internet use by hotel guests coming to watch the summer Olympic games.

Brownback produced a translated version of a document from China’s Public Security Bureau that requires hotels to use the monitoring equipment.

We’ve heard that BlackBerry use causes political polarization, but this seems like a whole ‘nother level. Then again, we’ll always be wary of our political enemies.
