Top Four BlackBerry Problems and How To Fix Them

Posted by Cooper on December 5, 2007

BlackBerry users love the versatility and mobility that the device brings to their business and personal life, but like all devices, BlackBerries have their issues. As the models have become newer, so the bugs have been weeded out, but there are several common technical problems that BlackBerry users seem to experience across the board. We’ve picked the top four and found some solutions to help you figure out your BlackBerry’s issues before you lose valuable time.

  1. The BlackBerry screen is frozen.
This problem happens on pretty much any computer-related device. Something happens and you suddenly can’t scroll up or down, or click on anything. It’s annoying, but there are actually two ways to fix it. You can perform a soft reset, which is done by pressing the ALT + CAP + DELETE keys on your handheld at the same time. If this doesn’t work, perform a hard reset. This is done by finding the RESET button at the back of the handheld. Sometimes, this button might be near the bottom, under the battery cover. Press the RESET button using a pin or paper clip. With either method, you shouldn’t lose any data.

  2. The BlackBerry doesn’t send or receive email messages.
This problem could be due to the lack of GPRS service. GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service, and it’s what allows your device to access data. The first thing you should do is perform a soft reset. If that doesn’t work, perform a hard reset. After both resets, check your wireless antenna signal strength. The antenna should show GPRS. If you can still make phone calls and access the Web, then your GSM service is still available. Try sending yourself an email – does it work? If it doesn’t, call your BlackBerry provider. Sometimes, your service could be delayed due to a billing problem or to downtime on the network.

  3. The BlackBerry won’t synchronize properly.
When you have push email, there’s nothing more annoying than seeing messages you’ve already read still in your inbox after you’ve deleted them. Sometimes, BlackBerry users find that this problem happens, and there’s a number of causes as to why. This page from BlackBerry.com explains the causes and how to fix them.

  4. The BlackBerry has backlight or screen delay problems.
Several people on some common BlackBerry forums have mentioned that their device is having backlight problems. These run the gamut from being unable to see the backlight at all to the screen delay flashing off too soon. Depending on which model you have, you can go into your Options or Preferences and select Screen/Keyboard. Here, you can adjust the backlight settings to your preferences. You will want to set the Backlight Timeout to your preferred time setting. This should extend the screen delay and stop it from coming on too soon. Users have reported that this often works, especially if you have an erratic or weak backlight. If this doesn’t work, you can install BBLight, a freeware program that users have found to make their backlight settings more accessible.

what about problems where the call log just erases itself? for exampe, if cannot get to my phone when it is ringing…i get back and it says i have a missed call, i want to view it or close out that window…no matter what i choose, it automatically clears whoever called me. if that person doesn’t leave a voicemail, i’ll never know they called. the same thing with text messages…my phone will alert me of a message whether it and SMS or MMS or yahoo messenger message..but when i go to check it, it’s gone. any idea how this could be fixed?

#985 Cooper on December 11th, 2007 at 1:33 pm

Hello LOLA, Cooper here.

After doing a little bit of digging, with regards to your stated issue I have come to the conclusion that your problem is related to low memory. Nearly every mention of this call log/SMS vanishing phenomenon has been related to the Pearl.

This is a “known issue” according to various cellphone providers and a patch is being created to address it. Verizon estimates their patch release date to be January 2008.

If you don’t mind, please post what model of BlackBerry you are using and who your carrier is.

In the meanwhile, a suggested course of action is to delete the cache in your web browser, and your old messages. You should also periodically take your battery out and wait 10 seconds and put it back in, and some how that keeps it from deleting.

No way it’s the memory!!! No way, I just bought the phone after Thanksgiving!

i was wondering how do you fix a blackberry screen if it doesn’t come on, and is the power light keeps blinking on and off.

#2805 don on May 1st, 2008 at 1:29 am

I connected my blackberry to my notebook in order to back up my information. When I disconnected it, it stopped working, not powering up at all. I’ve tried everything, downloading different desktop managers with nothing working. I took it to a cellphone repair shop and when the tech checked it out, he said he didn’t have the slightest idea what was wrong with it. I am disgusted. It was the first time I tried to connect it to the computer. And the insurance ran out two weeks before. HELP!

My BB 8700v keeps getting turned off during calls despite the fact that the battery is shown as full on my screen. This happens even if I have just fully charged my phone. I am thinking I should buy a new battery. Please advise on what to do.

John: Check out http://www.bbrepairshop.com/ — I can’t recommend them, since I’ve never used them. But I’ve heard a few good things.

David: See above.

Jennifer: Is this with every person you call? If so, it might be the microphone that’s an issue.

Mike: I’d take it to the store, just to be safe. Don’t want to go voiding a warranty.

Yessy: Need more info, specifically your carrier.

moe: You’re going to need to send that to a shop.

Don: Go to an authorized retailer for your carrier. They might be able to flash your phone.

Susannah: Looks like that’s a carrier issue. Maybe they’re blocking those services?

Nick: Can you hear people talking after the phone rings?

Shameka: Bring it to a corporate store and have it flashed.

Maryann: You can’t store apps on a data card. You need to store them locally.

Tasha: You have to call your carrier. This has happened to me once or twice, though it went away in time.

ZN: It might be the battery connection, not the battery itself. I’d have a repair shop look at the connection.

#6771 Rach on July 18th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

I have the blackberry Pearl and each couple of hours my messages and call log will automatically delete itself with an egg timer appearing in the middle of the screen for a long period of time. I assume this is to do with the memory but my messages are only 10-15 in number when it deletes them!

#7008 Ricardo G. on July 31st, 2008 at 7:49 am

I have 8700C and I install the Software Enterprise 4.2.2 and the sinchronization is ok.
After 2 or 3 weeks. I can’t download my e-mail from my Laptop, and I have the following problem:
c:\Doc\bmc\locals\temp\7e23_appcompat.txt
I think is something related with the sinchronization. so to fix this problem I remove the software and I reinstall it again and everything works fine for 2 or 3 weeks and the problems returns again.

Please help me :(

My blackberry got wet (it was in a bag with my water bottle and leaked)I went home and dried it with blow dryer but it is just dark. I tried taking the battery out and back in but nothing is happening.

Joe
#7140 Joe on August 24th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Tara,

My advice is always to stick it in a bowl of rice for 48 hours. Make sure to wipe dry the connectors on the battery. Don’t try to reconnect the battery. Just let the rice absorb the moisture in the handset, and try to reconnect and turn it on again in 2 days.

I have a blackberry curve and I woke up this morning unable to access icons or make calls. When ever I press the ball it just goes straight to the U’s in my address book? I think my cat may have played with it over night and may have assigned speed dial or something. Can someone help me please? beth_415@hotmail.com

Cooper
#7524 Cooper on October 7th, 2008 at 8:08 am

Dean: You have wiped your device by putting in the wrong password too many times you will have to do the following –
1- Open Desktop Manager and select Application Loader

2- Install the OS by following the prompts and selections

3- The device will reboot. It can take up to 15 minutes for the 1st boot.

4- Restore the previously made backup or re-sync

Uzzy: Do you have your handheld password protected? If so, when it’s locked it will only show the number and no contact name, when not locked it will show the contact name and number.

Go to Options > Security Options > General Settings and set Include Address Book to No.

Elizabeth: Sounds like a dirty trackball to me try cleaning it and report back if the problem persists. Here is a link to a post that describes the procedure for cleaning your trackball:
http://www.bbgeeks.com/quick-tips/how-to-clean-your-blackberry-trackball-88916/

#7530 Elizabeth on October 7th, 2008 at 6:39 pm

Thanks for your response in regards to my previous post. I can access all icons now and make calls…I don’t know how but it just happend. However, now when I lock the key pad * and send key do not unlock it??? Is there a way to restore original settings? I have taken your advise and selected application loader. What is OS? If I didn’t have a previous back up should I re-sync? I don’t know why I can’t unlock it? Thanks so much for your help.

#7531 Austin on October 7th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

I have a Blackberry 8330 Curve that I recently bought. At the main screen a hourglass consitently flasses. My phone runs extremely slow. It also gives me two messages “app error 200″ and “javascript error” and then it does a reset but the hourglasss is still there. How can I fix this?

Cooper
#7534 Cooper on October 8th, 2008 at 8:09 am

Elizabeth: First try doing a hard battery pull – this means pulling the battery out while the device is running – believe it or not this actually fixes the majority of BB related glitches. If that does not work, check out these posts for info on how to backup your data and wipe your device:
http://www.bbgeeks.com/blackberry-guides/guide-to-wiping-your-blackberry-88202/
http://www.bbgeeks.com/blackberry-guides/when-you-know-its-time-to-wipe-your-blackberry-88516/

The OS refers to your Operating System (the files that run your BlackBerry) Here is where you download the latest OS for your device:
http://www.blackberryforums.com/rim-software/58404-latest-operating-system-available-each-blackberry-device.html

Austin: You will need to wipe your device and reload the OS as well. Follow all the same instructions as above.

Hi i have the blackberry pearl with orange and i have a problem with the battery only lasting a few hours after a full charge, i tried another battery in the phone but it was the same. then i noticed that the little arrows in the top right corner were flashing most of the time the phone was on and also the hour glass keeps coming up when doing simple functions and even when i am not doing anything on the handset at all. Please help!!! thanks

#7649 Mell on October 19th, 2008 at 12:08 am

Hi, I have a bb pearl and have the same problem as Rach. Up until a couple of hours ago I was putting up with the problem, but now every time I try and go into my messages it comes up with an error: Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException. Any ideas???

Because of this issue, I haven’t been able to send any messages unless I go via the address book.

I still have the problem with messages and missed calls not being logged. I have even checked the options to make sure it logs all calls… Still nothing! :)

#7656 frustrated on October 19th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

I bought a BlackBerry Pearl 8120 on May, and the second day I purchased it, it was already presenting some problems. The call log would always get deleted, I couldn’t read my BBM, I couldn’t use any function because the screen stayed static—so I went back to where I had purchased it and they apparently rebooted/restarted the system. The phone still presented the same problems a week later, but worse— I went back and fought to get a new phone three weeks ago. I was given the same model but it is even worse than the first one. I cannot receive calls: either I press send when I can see and incoming call and it won’t work OR much worse, they call me and my phone does nothing but move the freaking hour-glass, if i try to access my viocemail, when i dial to eneter my password the phone wont respond, I don’t get text messages delivered, I can’t read BBM, the camera goes off and stays in camera mode unless I take the battery off, the phone doesn’t respond to any scrolling or keys, only the hour glass shows up, moves and freezes my phone. Sometimes it doesn’t even restart after removing my battery. My screen constantly goes blank and says “APP ERROR 552 RESET” I press reset and the hour glass appears staying like that– the phone doesn’t respond to any command and the screen goes blank again— basically I have NOT been able to use my phone or get contacted in the past three days. is there any explanation I can get?
I live in Venezuela and the phone was bought from the phone company TELEFONICA MOVISTAR. Thank You for any advice (besides getting a new one) or info I can get—I read somewhere that basically RIM uses the Latin American markets as guinea pigs to test their products– is this true?

Cooper
#7660 Cooper on October 20th, 2008 at 8:00 am

@Mell and @ Frustrated

If you were only having issues with messages not being stored etc I would suggest deleting a bunch of stuff from your BB to free up internal memory, but you both sound like you are having problems that are bigger than that. While I unfortunately do not have specific information on why your devices are not functioning, I can suggest an OS upgrade.

Upgrading to the most recent OS should eliminate the bugs you are seeing. Download and instructions are here:
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp

Let me know if this works for you – if not I will dig a little deeper.

Cooper
#7661 Cooper on October 20th, 2008 at 8:05 am

@John — those arrows you see indicate data being transmitted. If they are continuously flashing that indicates a problem. Do you have any 3rd party applications installed that “poll” for information on a regular basis? If so you might want to check it’s settings and see if you can increase the time between polling.

Also if you are in an area that does not have great coverage your BlackBerry will be constantly trying to find a better signal and this will cause a battery to drain quicker than normal.

I would suggest upgrading your firmware (OS). Use the link above and comment back if it worked or not.

#7705 sam on October 22nd, 2008 at 1:05 pm

my blackberry was thrown against the wall really hard and nothing is wrong with it on the outside but when ever i turn it on the screen shows up cracked but when its really not. is it internally broke?

#7740 Michelle on October 26th, 2008 at 10:58 pm

Hello, I have a Blackberry Pearl & all of a sudden when I try to call someone or they call me I can’t hear them. If I put the phone on speaker it’s all fine and if I use my handsfree its fine, so I’m wondering if I’ve pressed something I don’t know about?? Can anyone help??

Cooper
#7747 Cooper on October 27th, 2008 at 8:38 am

@sam sounds like you messed something up on the inside of your device when it hit the wall — some pics might help better identify what is going on.

@Michelle I suggest doing a hard battery pull to see if that kicks the system back into normal operation. Your issue is a know bug in some models of Curve and Pearl, but there is no official fix.

If a battery pull does not work, activate Voice Activate Dialing. This is a work around, the real fix will be a OS update.

That will free up the speaker and it will continue to work until you run a non-BlackBerry audio clip and interrupt it. (Reed McLay – BlackBerry forums)

my phone number appears twice on my screen what can i do to make it shows up once.

Cooper
#7871 Cooper on November 10th, 2008 at 1:07 pm

@mechanicow where exactly is your phone number appearing twice. I need a bit more info to try and sort that one out.

@Juan – you need to do a hard battery pull on your device and that should shake things up and get your messenger back to normal. A hard battery pull is when you take out the battery while the device is still powered on. Wait for 30 seconds and the replace.

This should work — your other contacts may have to do the same.

I just got my blackberry curve about a month ago. The problem started the first week I got it. I picked up my phone to check the time and the phone seemed to be off. I tried holding the power button to turn it back on. I tried plugging it in neither worked. I had to take the battery out and put it back in and then it turned back on. It has happend about 5 times sense I have had it. I have missed calls, sms, and alarms. What can I do? Will at&t fix or replace it?

#7881 Kevin on November 11th, 2008 at 8:36 am

Phone is blank except for a pic of a battery with a z through it. It was working fine until I tried to recharge the battery.

Cooper
#7884 Cooper on November 11th, 2008 at 10:30 am

@kevin do a hard battery pull and this should fix the problem. If it does not then you will have to reinstall the OS on your device.

@sk this sounds like a memory drain issue to me. The curve is known to have these types of problems. Check out this post for ways you can reduce your used memory:

i have a bb bold which the camera is not working propely, when it is on bright and strange colors appears on the screen and some green lines. Any ideas?

#8478 MATT on December 14th, 2008 at 12:55 am

i have bb curve 8310 and my camera isnt working properly as well as some other apps. the main problem is when i open the camera the screen is just black, then after some loading what appears to be the outline of a text box shows up, with the middle part (where the camera picture would appear) black. when i hit the back button that same part of the screen is a black box. if i put the phone in standby mode or let the screen go black when it returns to the home screen that image is frozen there. it returns to normal after i turn off then turn back on the phone but i still cant use my camera. the reason i brought up the other apps not working is because when i try to open them up a text box(possibly the same one as the one is half blacked out in the camera mode) shows up saying that i have too many applications running and i should close them. i have tried to exit out of them by opening them first using the “switch application” option then hitting the back button. nothing else i have tried will get it to work either. help?

Just purchased a BB curve. I am having alot of difficulty with internet. I google things and it reads “A problem occurred while trying to render the page”. From my home computer (or any public computer), I can get onto my e-mail and work info through a remote access. I enter my security info and I get a white screen with metaframe listed at the very top. I have the jave enabled as well as all the other options. Any ideas?

Thank you.

I have a BB curve 8320 with Tmobil.
The problem is that the only way I can make a phone call is when I am in a network with WIFI. And is not working when is only available
mobile network.
Thanks.

hi,
for the last few weeks my blackberry pearl has just been randomly deleting all my sms, mms, phone call history, emails and such how do i stop it doing this as it is getting on my nerves.
thanks for your help.

@tomo Your Pearl is deleting your messages etc because of low memory. Read this post for ways to fix it:

@albert – It sounds like you are in UMA mode on your BlackBerry. Read here for more info:

I dropped my Blackberry by accident onto the ground and of course it shut off. But when i turned it back on, there was only a backlight with no background picture or menu; just a blank light up screen. I could however, recieve text messages and phone calls but I can’t see any writing; is there a way I can fix this? Putting the charger in it does nothing either.

This is also an unlocked phone, I don’t know if that would have anything to do with it either.

Cooper
#9001 Cooper on January 14th, 2009 at 8:29 am

@Madelaine Because the device was dropped, there may be some internal damage that can not be fixed by anyone other than a professional.

That being said, I would try wiping the device and reinstalling the BlackBerry OS. This will reset the device to factory default state and hopefully repair anything that is not a result of physical damage.

HELP!!! BB Curve 8330 brand new with Sprint. I get caller ID on incoming calls, but only shows number. Does show name and number if is in my caller list. All of the phones I have used with Sprint in the past have always shown the State and the number the call was from, on every call. My 8330 does not show the call from State. In my line of work I receive calls from all 48 states in U.S.. But, in a busy schedule, depending on the projects of the day, calls from some area codes are a big destraction, from the immidiate projects. ANY HELP, PLEASE!???????????????????????

Cooper
#9081 Cooper on January 19th, 2009 at 9:51 am

@Newbe2bberry Try going into your security settings (if you have your BBlocked regularly) and change this value:

options => security options => general settings => then go down to “Include address book”, for this option select NO.

If your phone is locked you will not get the full caller id display.

This is the only thing I can think of that may be causing your problem. That being said it could be that RIM devices are not programmed to display that information when a call comes through.

#9139 Lauren on January 22nd, 2009 at 6:56 pm

I just got a blackberry yesterday and it worked fine until this afternoon. When I’m not on the phone it works fine but when I’m on a call the phone just turns off itself and a red light stays on the phone. Should I bring it back to the store that I got it from or is there something I can do to fix this problem myself?

#9197 Morgan on January 26th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

My black Berry Curve (with an AT&T carryer) Screen is frozen and i cannot pop the back off. I tryed Reseting it both ways. but it will not come unfrozen. how do i fixx this :[

Cooper
#9203 Cooper on January 27th, 2009 at 9:35 am

@Morgan – you have to get that backing off somehow. When you get it off you need to pull the battery out for 30 seconds while the device is powered on and then replace the battery. This should fix your issue.

@Lauren – sounds like you have some memory issues of a faulty connection to your battery. Try the steps listed here first — if they don’t resolve your issue the you may have to have a tech look at it:

Cooper
#9227 Cooper on January 28th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

@Maryam – try pulling the battery out while the BlackBerry is still powered on. Leave it out for 30 seconds and then replace. When the device powers on again the problem should be fixed.

If this does not work, please leave another comment and I will investigate further.

#9237 Corey on January 29th, 2009 at 6:47 am

I have a Curve 8330. A lot of times the speaker on my phone will just stop working. I took it to Verizon and they told me it’s a problem with the software and it happens when you receive a MMS. They said to take the battery out and that worked. Well I realized that this is only a temporary fix until I receive another MMS. I went back to the store and she said I could download an update from Blackberry.com that will fix it no problem. However, I cannot find the update on the site.

Cooper
#9238 Cooper on January 29th, 2009 at 7:43 am

@Corey – activate Voice Activate Dialing. This is a work around, the real fix will be a OS update – however this update does not exist yet.

Activating the Voice Dialing will free up the speaker and it will continue to work until you run a non-BlackBerry audio clip and interrupt it. (Reed McLay – BlackBerry forums)

#9262 Nicole on January 30th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

I just got a BB Bold with ATT a couple of days ago. When I try to make calls, the person on the other line can hear me, but I cannot hear them unless I put it on speaker phone. I can’t even hear the phone ring. The mute button is not on or anything, but I still have to put it on speaker just to hear.

i had to reset my email password, now my blackberry email will not work. I can not get emails, my phone calls are delayed by at least 30 minutes and messages the same. How can i get the email to work on my blackberry curve 8310?

#9320 Amanda on February 5th, 2009 at 12:47 pm

silly question…but my 8310 blackberry charge point does not work when i try to charge it

Cooper
#9321 Cooper on February 5th, 2009 at 1:45 pm

@nicole — see the response to @corey above

@june — try doing a hard battery pull while the device is on, pull the battery and replace after 30 seconds – should stop your Berry from hanging up. Also check your BIS settings to ensure your mail etc is being routed properly.

@Amanda — If it will not charge from either the USB or the wall adapter you need to bring it back to your retailer and have it replaced. Most likely a loose connection.

My blackberry curve has worked fine for the first 6 months that I’ve had it. Just recently when I’ve charged it, my phone will shut off and the red light will flash. It does turn back on but it will not charge. Should I take it to the store or is there a way to fix this?

Okay so I have a blackberry pearl. A particular contact on my list has been out of touch for a few days. At first it had the sound wave on their status, which I understand means their phone was shut off or they were on the phone, for a few days. Then their name became italisized and that means unreachable? For a day. And today they have the red x and are under the unavailable list. Is this person trying to ignore me? Or is there something wrong with my blackberry messenger? I’m not having trouble with any other contacts, just this one. Thanks =)

Save settings and you should be good.

@DeeDee Yes you can set a password to lock your entire device and then do the following to allow outgoing calls to be made even while the phone is locked: Options -> Security Options -> General Settings -> Enable the Allow Outgoing Calls While Locked option.

Hello, I have a BB curve 8330. I took the phone to cellular renewal to have the usb port replaced. They did fix that, but now the phone won’t power on. It seems that the little brown thingie (don’t know the name Sorry) that was on top of the usb port is now missing. Could this be the reason why it will not power on? And what is that called? Please help and do you know anyone who can fix it. I don’t have insurance on the phone and my contract isn’t up til May.

#9769 felu on February 27th, 2009 at 3:38 am

ok so my friend gave me his 8700c blackberry because he accidentally erased the software and the only thing working is the phone and the text messaging everthing else is blocked or something, the menu is non-existent there is only a list on the screen in which most of the options do not function. What can be done about this?

Cooper
#9770 Cooper on February 27th, 2009 at 7:55 am

All you need to do is wipe the device and reinstal the latest version of the OS. You will have to sign up for a BlackBerry data plan if you wish to use the BB messenger or the data functions.

Cooper
#9771 Cooper on February 27th, 2009 at 7:57 am

I am not sure what “little brown thingie” you are referring to, but this definitely sounds like they broke you phone — I believe your beef is with the repair shop and you should be requesting that they cover the new damages.

You are going to have to reinstall the OS on your device.

(from pinstack.com)
Re-install the BlackBerry® Device Software and applications to the BlackBerry smartphone by completing the following steps:

1. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer.
2. Open BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
3. Double-click Application Loader. The Application Loader Wizard appears. You may need to unplug and re-attach the USB cable to the BlackBerry smartphone at this point for it to be recognized by Application Loader.
4. Click Next.
5. Choose the port that the BlackBerry smartphone is connected to and click Next.
6. If prompted, type the BlackBerry smartphone password and click Next.
7. The Device Application Selection screen appears. Select the applications to be loaded onto your BlackBerry smartphone.
8. If the Device Backup screen appears, choose whether or not to automatically back up the BlackBerry smartphone. Click Next.
9. Click Next. The Completing the Application Wizard screen appears, displaying all the software that will be loaded to your BlackBerry smartphone.
10. Click the Advanced button and make sure that Erase all application data and Erase all currently installed applications are both selected. Note: If the Application Loader is not able to access all of the BlackBerry smartphone data, then both Erase all application data and Erase all currently installed applications will be grayed out.
11. Click Next, and then click Next again.
12. Click Finish. The BlackBerry Device Software is now loaded on the BlackBerry smartphone. Do not disconnect the BlackBerry smartphone until the process has completed.

My Curve will not charge. It seems like there is a problem with the connector to the charger as it doesn’t work with my car charger or my wall charger. They are selling a connector replacement for $2.99 plus shipping but you need to know how to replace it. Any ideas? It looks like it is a known problem. Will Verizon do anything about this? I think I will have to buy a charged battery so that I can back up my files.

@justine – get your contact to resend his service books — that sounds like a problem with his network status not yours.

Cooper
#10534 Cooper on April 20th, 2009 at 7:55 am

@jess that information is stored in the device memory not on the SIM — you will have to wipe the device in order to get rid of her preferences and contacts etc.

@Des
Check to make sure your radio has not been turned off by accident. A quick loss of all those services might indicate that your radio has shut itself off either due to low battery or by accident.

I have a 8707v OS 4.1.0.378_P3.2.0.9
It’s in a constant reboot cycle. I tried the soft reset (aka 3 key combo) and a hard reset (batt. pull while on) and it hasn’t helped. Any Ideas I could try?

I can’t connect it to the PC as it restarts every 15-20sec.

#10665 Cobrin on April 27th, 2009 at 8:29 am

Argh the net is a wonderful thing, I fixed it.
I followed this tute to the letter.

http://blackberryfaq.com/index.php/What_to_do_next_if_Jl_Cmder_will_not_connect_and_wipe

I found it works when you start the AppLoader just when the backlight turns on and the hour glass is about to start. Apploader found Unknown device and did its thing installing the OS again. Beauty….

Good morning:
I have a bb curve. I have a blue line down the screen and I don’t know where it came from. The phone is less than a month old. Do you know what it might be or should I take it back to T-mobile and exchange it? Thank you.

#10859 Danielle on May 6th, 2009 at 11:28 am

Please help- My blackberry (the first model, i believe) has adopted the tendency to randomly white out. In the past i have been able to operate it after a few moments of tapping the back of the phone. Recently, however, the white screen has stubbornly decided to remain white. Please help- i can’t afford to repair this phone extensively, nor can I buy a new one.

I would suggest wiping out the phone completely and then reinstalling your carriers operating system.

My BlackBerry 8330 keyboard is locked and trackwheel does not open up the folders. I can hear the phone ring but cannot pick up the call nor can I make the calls. I have performed a soft reset and a hard reset but neither worked. The only time I can get the screen to show is to take the battery out and put it back in but, this only last 45 seconds then its a blackout. Please help if you have a solution to this problem.

I am having the issue where my phone is wiping itself such as the call log, sms, and bbm. I have 19303899 bytes free. I work for Nextel BB tech support and I am almost to the point of contacting RIM on this issue this is my 2 BB. My first one liked to hard reset itself all the time and this one just freezes non stop I have hardly anything in this phone compaired to the last and my other BB never did this. Please let me know what to do I’ve done Master Radio Reset, Register Now, Hard Reset, checked the frequency, and everything possible the last thing I haven’t done is found the LMM (low memory manager) and put a block on it. I have the sprint 8330 and it has done this now 3 times today. Please let me know what i can do

My BB went for a dip in the ocean this past weekend, I pulled it out within seconds of it landing on the water/sand, took out the battery and SIM card and only turned it on twice since the mishap occurred. When I did turn it on, the screen lit up and the hourglass came on, eternally flipping itself over and over. I’ve turned it off, taken out the battery and SIM card once again. Its been 2 days. What are the chances of my BB working again?

I have an 8700g. The screen has gone completely white and there seems to be an inner screen crack? I do not know how this happened but now my phone is shot. The alarm continues to go off every morning which leads me to believe the device works and just the screen is broken. Is it possible to get screens replaced?

Cooper
#11371 Cooper on June 1st, 2009 at 8:21 am

@Michelle yes it is possible to get the screen replaced, do a search for “BlackBerry Repair” plus your area to find some contacts.

You may be better off getting anew device though as they have gotten much better since the 8700.

Cooper
#11373 Cooper on June 1st, 2009 at 8:25 am

@tata If you remove the battery and plug the device into your PC using the USB cable does the LED light turn on? If it does then that means your device is functional but you have a dead battery (not unheard of with Bold batteries).

You may have to do a full OS reload to get it back up and running.

Cooper
#11376 Cooper on June 1st, 2009 at 8:37 am

@Marcus I would look at how much free memory you have – when the Pearl memory gets very low you will have issues.

Check for installed applications running in the background and any files you can delete to free up some of that memory.

#11388 Maureen on June 2nd, 2009 at 8:34 am

My bbcurve is letting me receive calls, then after I’m on the phone for a minute or two, a buzzing interference comes across the line and my phone cuts out. Everything else working fine. This has been going on for a week. Any ideas?

Cooper
#11398 Cooper on June 2nd, 2009 at 12:42 pm

@Maureen try fixing this with a battery pull. If that does not work you may need to bring it in to have it replaced. I have heard of others with the same issue but a definite source for the problem was never revealed.

#11426 garrett on June 3rd, 2009 at 4:30 am

ye my signal is always sayin its off and i turn it on and in like 1 minute it goes off again! it said before that i had to turn the radio on i have a blackberry perl 8130 so wut is the radio and how do i turn it on?

and i tryed puling my battery out and every thing

Cooper
#11429 Cooper on June 3rd, 2009 at 7:22 am

@garrett Your BlackBerry radio is the component that actually sends out the signal for your phone. In order to turn it on you must go to Select “Manage Connections” icon, and select “Mobile Network” and make sure it is checked on.

The Pearl has a little icon that looks like an antenna – when you click on it you can “turn Wireless on”.

#11444 gemma bb1 on June 3rd, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Please help. Since I got my blackberry pearl 8120 a week ago, every time I turn the phone off using the red key and turn it back on again, the SMS symbol comes on the screen. When I go to read the messages, the last few say [receiving text] then only displays a few lines of the text message. When I go back into it a while later it is still the same. Why does it do this and can anything be done to stop it. It’s getting really annoying as I’m having to try and remember what everyone has sent to me. Thanks in advance.

#11451 Kasey on June 4th, 2009 at 4:33 am

I have the blackberry 8100 and as of lately this problem has occured practically over night. So my phone died so bad one night that it wouldnt turn on at all and the key pad buttons looked as is they were having a seizure. I left it at home and thought I had it plugged in all the way to charge but it wasnt and when I managed to get it on and charging but absolutely none of the keys worked, but I recieved everything promptly. I left the battery out for several hours and ever key started to work again except the QW ! button and the trackball. I took the track ball off and fiddled with the pad by pressing it and its like it rewired itself to the QW ! key and now that key does not work either. The trackball does not scroll. There is no water damage and this literally just happened. At one point when I had it plugged in it would just repeatedly press the QW ! button on its own. Help please!!

Cooper
#11481 Cooper on June 5th, 2009 at 8:21 am

@kasey While the Pearl is powered on you should pull the battery out and leave it out for 30 seconds. Replace the battery and your keys and trackball should be back to normal. Any time your Pearl glitches out like that just pull the battery.

Cooper
#11482 Cooper on June 5th, 2009 at 8:23 am

@gemma bb1 You shoudl also try a battery pull while the device is powered on – replace after 30 seconds.

When all else fails: For those getting App 200 Error RESET go to this website for a way of wiping it completely and starting from scratch. It was the only way that worked for me.
http://supportforums.blackberry.com/rim/board/message?board.id=Bold&view=by_date_ascending&message.id=17142#M17142

Good Luck (yes, it will wipe everything except your microSD card, but it does work)

Hey, I have a small problem with my Storm 9530. It seems like the phone thinks that I have a headset attached to it even though it has been removed. I can tell because the phone will not ring, play music, or even play call audio through any of the speakers but you can hear it all just fine when you have a headset plugged in or you actually pull up the menu and hit the activate handset or speaker option. I have tried to do a few battery pulls with and without a headset attached to the audio port. Also I have tried to push headphones in and pull them out in different ways when it was in the middle of a call or playing music and nothing has worked. I even reinstalled the OS, and still I have the same problem. I never experienced this problem before and never even plug in an audio jack unless I am playing my mp3s on my home speakers. At this point what would you recommend doing? I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you.

#12129 jamie on June 29th, 2009 at 7:35 am

i just got the blackberry 9000 and i was told that my voicemail box wasn’t setup. So i looked online to see how to set it up and they said to put my number in the voicemail options thing, but now everytime i miss a call people can’t leave a message still and it is just a busy signal, and everytime i try to call it i get a busy signal too.

Cooper
#12130 Cooper on June 29th, 2009 at 7:55 am

Take the phone into your nearest retail location or call into your provider from a phone other than the one you want to hook voicemail up on.

Voicemail setup needs to be done on the carriers end.

Cooper
#12134 Cooper on June 29th, 2009 at 8:02 am

@Victor Try calling yourself and leaving a voicemail – then check that voicemail and delete it.

Also activate the speakerphone and then deactivate it.

Your speaker should be back to normal after that. If not then I suggest having it checked out by the RIM techs.

hi there, i’m lisa frm Singapore. Need some help/advices regarding my bf’s blackberry 8800. apparently his whole keyboard including the lock button is unable to work plus whenever he slots in the battery back, his phone would just switch ‘ON’ on its own but unable to switch off due to the impaired keyboard. My bf claims that it might be due to moisture. he haf already tried ways such as Switching it on & off but everything is in vain. Would kindly appreciate if u could help in solving this cos the phone is only 2-3 months old & SG has no main outlet for Blackberry. thanks.

Cooper
#12216 Cooper on July 2nd, 2009 at 7:02 am

@andrea @brittany @lisa Unfortunately if you do not dry out the device completely there is a good chance residual moisture could be damaging your phone every time you power it on.

Once that happens you are out of luck. Your warranty is voided and the dealers will not replace the device.

I wish I had better news for you all.

Lisa, your boyfriend should have placed his device in a bucket of rice for 48 hours immediately after getting it wet. Being too eager and turning it on does more harm than good unfortunately =(

#12299 Cooper on July 7th, 2009 at 7:05 am

You should have MMS on your phone – check to see what version of the BlackBerry OS you are running.

If it is lower than 4.5 you will need to upgrade.

Check os by menu > options > about

you will see a number like 4.2. x x x.x xx buildxxxx

this should be 4.5 – if it is not then upgrade and you will get MMS

Cooper
#12300 Cooper on July 7th, 2009 at 7:12 am

@ashley is your BlackBerry controlled by your work? It sounds like there is an IT policy on the phone that would prevent the password from being removed.

Hello there!

I have 2 different blackberry’s with different problems.

1- my microphone doesn’t work. I just bought the phone from Ebay(never making THAT mistake again) and whenever I place/recieve a call I can hear the other person but they can’t hear anything from my side. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

2-The BB that I’m currently using doesn’t recognize the memory card when it’s in the phone. I can’t retrieve any of my ring tones or photos. Additionally, this phone doesn’t allow me to send or recieve MMS messages even though I have the unlimited blackberry plan.

Does anyone know anything that can help me with either of these problems?

Hello!

the outgoing arrow keeps freezing on my bb curve 8320. Even when i an bit doing anything at all. I am signed on yahoo msgr and windows live and whenever I send an IM to myself, I just dont recieve it. I will recieve it when I pull the battery out or restart my phone. But it keeps happening most of the time. I am worried to not get the most important IMs and emails.

I have tried battery pull, restart, installing a new OS (a few times) w/ wipe.. what else can i do to fix it..

your help is much appreciated.

Dear Sir
I have a Blackberry Curve 8310. Incoming calls shows numbers sometimes names. How do I program to show names only for incoming calls?

#12816 Mya on July 29th, 2009 at 7:23 am

My mom just gave me her bb Curve 8330 and it’s pretty much brand new, she had it replaced last month with a new on. But my microSD card had music and pictures on it and worked just fine, but when I connected it last night to my laptop to another song, I got the media card error. It keeps saying that it can’t be read. I formatted the card before using it, so I don’t see the problem. I backed up all my stuff in temp files on my computer and even when I use the Media Sync to sync my iTunes playlist, it says that it synced and I can plainly see the files in the Media Sync folder on the removable drive folder. I’ve formatted the media card over and over and it works fine saving pictures and video until I hook it up to my laptop. Help?

I have the new BB Tour 9630, and have had it for a little under a week. A day ago I noticed a white line at the bottom of my screen that flashes like lightening. This is a bit annoying considering my background is black. When I open applications or go onto the internet, the line still appears although black on a white background. Is there any way that I can get rid of this?

Please let me know.

Thanks,
Shauna

Cooper
#12883 Cooper on July 31st, 2009 at 7:44 am

Definitely bring this handset back and get a replacement. That line you are seeing is a hardware glitch and a few people are getting it. Check the new phone before you leave the store as it looks like it may be a semi common problem.

Ok I have a SERIOUS problem. I have had my blackberry since Jan and I dropped it recently, now it won’t connect to the mobile network…. I can turn it on an off, and it turns the “radio” on for about a min or thirty seconds an then it automatically turns the radio off but the phone stays on… I can’t receive calls, txts, nothing!! I’m freaking out PLEASE help. I have done battery pulls, my phone is 100% FULLY charged, but it keeps disconnecting itself from the mobile network that I’m connected to…… Is there a way for me to fix this problem????

#12928 Bee on August 2nd, 2009 at 9:09 am

my friend accidentally deleted me from his contacts yesterday…i couldn’t re-add him (the request did not go through to his phone), but he readded me and it went through to me.
Now, if he sends me a bbm then i get it and he can see that i’ve read it. if i send him one, it says its delivered but he doesnt get it!!

I did a hard reset (wiped my whole phone)and i could re-add all my other contacts….but not him because the request doesn’t go through to his phone!!
its really crucial that i am able to bbm him……
help would be really apprectiated

#12963 Cooper on August 4th, 2009 at 9:09 am

Try pulling your battery out and replacing it after 30 seconds or so. It sounds like you either have limited memory on your device or you are experiencing network issues.

Cooper
#12964 Cooper on August 4th, 2009 at 9:12 am

That sounds like you may have damaged the internal components when you dropped it. It could also be caused by an application running in the background – did you install anything right around the time this problem started happening?

Hey Bob – if you update your os to 4.5 (.131 or higher if possible) and get Opera Mini you will be able to see those captcha boxes. There is no support for earlier BlackBerry os.

#13232 Kate S. on August 15th, 2009 at 11:51 am

I’ve had the curve 8330 by Sprint for about 3 weeks now. The first week it worked fine, but now about 80% of the time, it’s delayed when I send messages. I’ll be typing to someone, click the trackball to hit send, and then it just freezes like that for a good 15 seconds and then sends the message. It’s so frustrating! There isn’t an hour glass either. I’ve pulled out the battery while the phone was still on, and I did the control + caps + delete thing and that didn’t help either. Help!

Try removing the battery and the plugging it in via usb cable to your pc. Sometimes Desktop Manager will recognize it that way.

If you still have no luck you may have to wipe the device and start fresh. it is always advisable to perform regular backups in case your phone glitches out.

#13519 Chloe on August 23rd, 2009 at 1:24 pm

So I woke up this morning and my blackberry is completely unfunctionable. I have to press the shift button in order to select and there is no way of going back, I have to just keep pressing the cancel/end call button. Also when I press the ball to select something it acts as though Im pressing the star button and tries to dial. The menu button dials wewewewwe. Do you have any idea what the problem is?

Cooper
#13528 Cooper on August 24th, 2009 at 7:35 am

@Chloe – try pulling the battery out of your phone while it is still powered on. Replace it after 30 seconds. when the phone reboots everything should be back to normal.

Sometimes the phones glitch out like that =(

#13716 Cooper on September 2nd, 2009 at 8:48 am

@Bev Do a battery pull – pull the battery while the device is powered on and replace after 30 seconds — if that does not work, try and swap your theme to a new one and then back again. This is a common issue.

I have had my blackberry pearl for a few months and ever since i taken in outta the box it eraced all my missed notifications (missed calls, text messages, facebook etc) everyone i talk to about the pearl has the same problem. I have taken the battery out every morning as a part of my routine. now it doesnt work at all!

Cooper
#13888 Cooper on September 10th, 2009 at 7:25 am

That is a memory issue. Different apps you run, themes and media stored on your device will cause memory leakage over time.

Because the Pearl has a small amount of memory to begin with it will start to erase things like call logs and sms etc. in order to free enough memory to run as effectively as possible.

Read this post for ideas on how to reduce your memory usage and get your Pearl working better:

for the 8330 Blackberry curve go to options/advanced options/applications/then left click on dots/ the edit permissions/ then allow in everyone and it will fix but you have to do it with each app that is giving you the Uncaught exception Java.lang. error so it will fix each one that you get the error from

It sounds like there may have been some physical damage to the phone. try pulling the battery out while the phone is powered on and then replacing it after 30 seconds.

In the event that it is just glitching out this may help resolve the issue. Unfortunately if it is hardware damage you will soon be shopping for a new device =(

I would back up all of your data and reload your OS – it sounds like you have a corrupted file somewhere in there. you may also want to check your memory card before reloading the os (if you have one) – a poorly formatted memory card can cause your system to become unstable.

Cooper
#14496 Cooper on October 5th, 2009 at 12:32 pm

You can try wiping and restoring it again but if your address book was not part of the initial backup I do believe you are out of luck =(

Cooper
#14697 Cooper on October 14th, 2009 at 7:24 am

This happens once in a while on some models. The problem is that the speaker is getting confused. You can try a couple things to fix this issue:

1. Stick a set of headphones in the headphone jack for 3-5 seconds, then go back to the HOME SCREEN and unplug the headphones

2. Play music or ringtone in media then switch to speaker

Good luck.

#14906 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 9:52 am

@stacy Have you tried plugging it into both the usb ports on your pc and the wall charger? I find that sometimes the usb port is not capable of generating enough juice to power a completely dead battery and leaving it hooked up to the wall charger over night seems to help jump start it.

Cooper
#14913 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 10:03 am

@dennis gag perform a battery pul while the device is powered on – replace the battery after 30 seconds and your keyboard should be back to normal

Also try the Shift key.

Cooper
#14918 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 10:07 am

@panos Connect to Desktop Manager and update your apps (may have to delete them first – reboot then add again). Sometimes those icons go missing for unknown reasons.

Also if you are using a custom theme you may want to try switching back to the default to see if they appear.

Cooper
#14919 Cooper on October 22nd, 2009 at 10:10 am

@rach Does the Desktop Manager recognize the BlackBerry when plugged in? If so then perform a backup of your data and reinstall the os.

Hey Cooper ! I have 8700v and 8900 curve, at times while receiving call, the name of the caller is not displayed even if it is saved in the phonebook. This is intermittent, for same person i may see the name as well at times. Problem is in approx 60% of the incoming calls. If i receive or miss the call, the name shows in the call log even if it was not shown while the phone was ringing. Happened with both the phones, mostly with 8700V ! What could it be?

#15080 Allison F on October 28th, 2009 at 5:38 am

Hello, I just got my tour less than a month ago. everything seemed to be going great until last week when my camera will just pop onto my screen and start taking pictures. Even when I click out of it and try to do something else it will pop up, making it impossible to call, text etc. It seems to be doing this a ton in one day than maybe not at all the next, so its completely random. Is there anything i should do? Or do you think I should take it in?

Thanks so much for your time!

Cooper
#15083 Cooper on October 28th, 2009 at 7:29 am

@Jack D I suspect this is an issue with Content Protection on your address book – try this:

Options>Security Options>General Settings, make sure under Content Protection, “include Address Book” should be set to “No”

Cooper
#15084 Cooper on October 28th, 2009 at 7:31 am

@Rodrigo

The only thing I can suggest is trying to wipe the device completely. Reinstall the operating system and see if the problem persists.

If the issue remains you will need to get a new device. A battery pull usually clears up software glitches like that so it may indicate a hardware problem.

Cooper
#15085 Cooper on October 28th, 2009 at 7:33 am

@brenda It sounds like you have knocked something loose inside your berry. Looks like you will have to bring it in to a tech (local store) to see if they can diagnose it a bit further. If calls etc work I suspect that a connection with the screen is broken.

Cooper
#15086 Cooper on October 28th, 2009 at 7:40 am

@Allison F

Have you installed any kind of applications recently (just before the camera started glitching out)?

It sounds like a software issue. I suggest trying a battery pull to see if that prevents it from happening again. pull the battery while the device is on and replace after 30 seconds.

If that does not work I would suggest completely wiping your device and reinstalling the operating system from scratch. It could be cause by a corrupted install.

And also, is there a way to expand the internal memory?
Thanks, hope you can help me!

I have the Curve 8330 and this is the 4th phone that’s had to be replaced. The current issue is the keyboard/trackball are both inoperable and the screen says ‘run setup wizard.’ I haven’t dropped it or gotten it wet and it’s a brand new (not refurbished) replacement from Sprint that is only 8 days old. When I took it to Sprint yesterday, I was told that it’s been water damaged and was shown the telltale red indicator marks by the Sprint tech. I insisted the phone hasn’t been near water or moisture of any kind but they refuse to replace it…even though I have insurance. Grrr! I hate Sprint! Any advice?

#15245 Kelly on November 2nd, 2009 at 9:06 pm

Update! Screw those bleepity bleeps at Sprint…I fixed it myself. Thanks to lots of info I read online and a helpful youtube video on how to disassemble the Curve, it wasn’t so bad. I took it apart, peeled up that white papery sticker thing that covers the keypad area and cleaned it with 91% isopropyl alcohol and a swab that came with a lens cleaning kit. Found a reassembly video(thank goodness)and crossed my fingers. Voila! It worked!! I actually danced around the house excited NOT to be at the mercy of Sprint, for once.

I got a BlackBerry Bold about 2 weeks ago, it has the email icon up by the time on my homepage, but when I go to check my email, there is nothing unread!! I deleted all the messages and still there is an unread email! I checked facebook and I had no emails, no new SMS’s.. Whats going on??

I HAVE A HUGE PROBLEM!!! My screen is off and it will only come back on(for about 5 seconds) if I plug it in a charger. My trackball won’t work and NONE of my buttons work!!! I have over 400 messages and i can’t get on my phone.

#15436 Isis on November 10th, 2009 at 6:12 am

My Blackberry Curve 8520 is telling me to enter “blackberry” to continue, the problem is that when I do it does not work. I have attempted this several times and now it is telling me that this is my last attempt and that if it is incorrect all my data will be lost. This all started when I attempted to backup/restore because I was getting a black screen when trying to expand my pictures.

#15611 Sarah on November 16th, 2009 at 3:22 pm

I was told to update two of my apps which I did but after I updated them, one of them wouldn’t let me go onto it saying there was an error so I uninstalled it and it didn’t tell me to reboot so I turned it off and took out the battery and when I went to turn it back on and all it has been doing for the past 3 hours is flash red at me and not turn it back on, even when on charge.
:(
Please help me!!

I have a blackberry pearl 8100. Before I take pics, the screen is fine, and the colors are all normal on the image. After a take the picture however, and while it is saving the image, green lines/zigzags/snow (whatever you want to call it, it’s just green!)show over the image. Any ideas? Nothing else is wrong with the phone.

#15766 R A C H E L on November 20th, 2009 at 4:01 am

I JUST GOT THE NEW BOLD 9700 FROM TMOBILE. IT WAS WORKING FINE UNTIL THE BROWSER FROZE TODAY. WHEN IT STARTED WORKING AGAIN, I CAN’T CLICK ON A LINK WITH THE CURSOR. I CAN PUT IT OVER THE LINK AND CLICK ENTER ON THE KEYPAD TO GO TO THAT LINK BUT I CAN’T CLICK IT. :( DID I ACCIDENTALLY CHANGE SOMETHING IN THE SETTINGS OR IS THIS A DEFECT?

#15778 Cooper on November 20th, 2009 at 9:59 am

This sounds like a minor glitch: Try removing the battery while the device is still on and replacing it after 30 seconds. This will force the BlackBerry to cycle itself and hopefully resolve that glitch.

Hey there, I recently tried to update the new BBM on my phone, but when I downloaded the software onto my phone, my phone went to a white screen with a black box that has a square, a triangle and a circle with a big dash through it. Kind of like a do not enter sign. It also says 507 underneath. Since then, my phone won’t leave the screen. Help!

Cooper
#15890 Cooper on November 24th, 2009 at 10:18 am

Unfortunately your operating system has been corrupted when something went wrong during the new BBM download.

To get your BlackBerry working again simply follow these instructions:

1) Download the latest version of the handheld os from your carrier’s web site
2) Execute the downloaded file
3) Locate and delete VENDOR.XML from your PC’s C: drive
4) Connect the BB and start Desktop Manager
5) Run the App loader / Update your BlackBerry

Everything should get set up again and your phone will be as good as new. You will lose all of your contacts etc so it is probably best to do regular backups of your device so that you are protected and can recover if this type of thing happens again.

Cooper
#15891 Cooper on November 24th, 2009 at 10:34 am

The problem that is happening is you have a corrupted piece of software on your device that is being read at startup.

When this software fails it forces the reboot loop. The only way to fix this is to completely wipe your device and start fresh.

Here is a link to help you with the process:
http://www.bbgeeks.com/blackberry-guides/guide-to-wiping-your-blackberry-88202/

Cooper
#15893 Cooper on November 24th, 2009 at 10:47 am

Ok – so your phone is most likely dead and I would not suggest spending any more money to fix the hardware itself.

You should be able to recover everything that is on the phone by plugging it into your desktop manager / media manager and doing backups etc.

This data can then be loaded onto a new BlackBerry when you get one.

Good luck

My blackberry curve 8900 was in its magnetic black pouch when it fell from my lap onto the floor—there was no damage on the screen or anything however the screen now is blurry on the very top and almost all white under that..it is working fine though–receiving phone calls and other facebook/bbm alerts…how do you suppose this issue can be solved?

I have bb 8520 curve and some problems with it.
the trackbutton works absolutely normal, but when i want to take picture, zoom doesnt work at all. it worked before. but then just stopped. and i cant get whats the problem, because this is the only time when its not working.

when i want to make a video, it stops and says ‘this video cannot be saved’. but i used to make some videos before and everything was fine. i even thought maybe the memory card was full but no.

andd the last problem which i discovered just yesterday, is that the photogallery doesnt work. When i click on some picture, i can’t see it. I just see this black screen. It worked when i turned my bb off and on again, but now when i wanted to click on a picture, i couldnt see it again. i dont know what’s wrong with my phone. it was totally fine. i got it in october. its pretty new. i never even dropped it.
i hope u can help me with this..
thanks in advance!!

I have a 8900 blackberry curve,,,I plugged in the ipod headphones and after i plugged them out, the headset and speakers stopped working…and when I plug them again in, it starts beeping…..does anyone know whats the problem and how can I solve it?

Cooper
#16044 Cooper on November 30th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

@riem

Try two things – first pull your battery while the device is still powered on – replace the battery after 10 minutes.

Second plug and unplug the headphones forcefully if the battery pull does not work.

Cooper
#16047 Cooper on November 30th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

@rich

To fix this do the following:
press the phone key (green)
options
smart dialing
country code should say unknown or +1
try entering your area code in the next line
National number length should be 10 (if in US or Canada)
menu button > save

Hello, there! I’m using a blackberry storm. Usually in my housing area, the network signal would be EDGE or GPRS. After servicing my BB Storm weeks ago due to internal defect, I cant get any signals when Im at home. Only SOS appear on the screen. Elsewhere outside my home, there is no problem on the signal. I can receive up to 3G.

Looks like you need to get a replacement phone. If the repairs damaged your radio functionality then they should be responsible for replacing the entire device.

Would you know a way I may be able to fix this? Please & Thankyou!

Curve 8320. Unit keeps firing 0 and + across the screen. I replaced the two keyboard pieces but it continues to be possessed.

0 and + pop up in dialer mode, while on text screen, login, almost everything.

#16401 Cooper on December 10th, 2009 at 9:41 am

@roberto in your call logs (phone key > options > Smart Dialing) you will have to make changes to your country code. Mess around with the National number length if necessary but you should only have to change the country code so it matches whatever country you are in.

Hi

I got a problem that is really just annoying me more then anything,

When i recieve an sms message, if i click on the sms icon and read it in there and reply etc and then click out to the homepage, the messages box still has the 1 new messgae sign on it, even though i read it in the sms box.
The same if for if i read it in the messages icon and then go back to the homepage, the sms/mms icon still has an unread symbol on it, even though i have read and dealt with it.
Is there anyway i can stop this because it is really annoying clicking on the icon and back out again just to get rid of the symbol.

Thanks John

#16526 Cooper on December 14th, 2009 at 8:33 am

Sounds like you have some memory issues. Read this post and follow some of the steps listed to reduce the amount of used memory on your Pearl.

Should fix that issue for you: http://www.bbgeeks.com/blackberry-guides/8-ways-to-trim-the-fat-from-your-blackberry-88493/

Cooper
#16528 Cooper on December 14th, 2009 at 8:37 am

@Semone You definitely have a problem – my advice would be to download the latest OS from your carrier and go ahead and wipe your phone. Starting from scratch will eliminate a software conflict as a cause for the device resetting itself.

If the problem continues I would highly suggest returning that particular phone and getting a replacement.

Cooper
#16529 Cooper on December 14th, 2009 at 8:45 am

@Ashley – check out this post for suggested fixes – it could be cause by either a hardware issue or a software glitch.

http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Curve-BlackBerry-8300/Could-not-start-the-camera/td-p/52456

When you reset the phone did you do a battery pull while the phone was on? If not try this first – pull while the phone is on and replace after 30 seconds or so.

Cooper
#16530 Cooper on December 14th, 2009 at 8:46 am

@katie – unfortunately that info is gone gone gone =(

Cooper
#16531 Cooper on December 14th, 2009 at 8:49 am

@chelsea
Try doing a battery pull to see if they show up again – pull the battery while the device is powered on and replace after 30 seconds.

If you have done a backup of your contact etc recently you can connect to DM and see if you can load them again from the backup. (always a good idea to do regular backups)

Cooper
#16535 Cooper on December 14th, 2009 at 9:08 am

This is a common issue – first try a battery pull while the device is powered on and replace after 30 seconds. Another possible issue is if you are running a custom theme. On occasion the theme will not update this icon. Try switching back to one of the default themes on your device an then switching back to your custom theme.

#16537 john on December 14th, 2009 at 10:38 am

I have downloaded the quickpull aplication, which is a battery pull i think!!
I also just have the precision orange theme which is the default one it came with !! Once the machine has had a battery pull though the phone seems to work alright and the problem stops, then it comes back again after a while of using it, do you know why this is ?!?!

Thanks

Cooper
#16558 Cooper on December 15th, 2009 at 9:27 am

@John Unfortunately this is a common glitch in the system and there is no real fix that will stop it from happening over and over – battery pull is your best option.

@djorn Can you be more specific – do you see any flashing LED when you plug the BlackBerry into your PC?

Do you see a blank white screen?

#16567 David on December 15th, 2009 at 11:42 am

blackberry is by far the most worthless, frustrating, and annoying investment I have ever made. Constant loss of connection to the Internet (my mobile network stays up and running perfectly fine for calls and texts, however I try to open up a web page and it doesn’t work) and doing a battery pull is just dumb. Yes, it works, but how many phones have you ever heard that requires this troubleshooting method…..ZERO. I’ve never even HEARD of this fix until I got a blackberry. Like I said, yes it works, you pull out the battery and wait a minute, put it back in, phone starts up (which takes a MINIMUM of a WASTEFUL 5-10 MINUTES!!!!!!!). No phone, computer, laptop, whatever, I’ve ever used takes anywhere near this long to boot up. I have constant lagging while using the phone and have had to forcfully stop myself from throwing the phone against the wall.

Honestly, I thought that maybe I just got a lemon, you know, a faulty product, so I got curious and decided to find out if anyone else had these issues. I posted on my Facebook of these issues, and out of 250+ responses from friends (I have over 900 friends) only ONE person said they absolutely loved their blackberry and had zero bad feedback to give on it. Makes me believe that the only RARE situations with blackberry are SUCCESS stories.

If you don’t believe me, try it out for yourself, but don’t say you weren’t warned. I will NEVER recommend ANY blackberry to ANY person. The cons by far out-weigh the pros and isn’t worth the time. Even if i was provided a FREE one, I would still not be satisfied.

Stick with the iPhone, or the Droid, or even HTC (I don’t know this one first hand, but I haven’t heard anything bad about it). These phones all work the way they tell you they are supposed to, no BS.

#16568 David on December 15th, 2009 at 11:52 am

This was a rant I posted on another site because I’m too frustrated with the endless list of problems — for starters…connection issues, phone lagging, slow start up, trackball constantly getting stuck (my guess is dust build up restricts the movement from time to time, makes it so you can only scroll up, not down, irritating to fix/adjust it to work again). Even with no apps running, the phone still lags ridiculously as if I was trying to multitask 6 different apps at once — that’s pretty poor performance for a phone that’s supposed to be primarily used for business people. The only option to fix a lost Internet connection is to restart the phone — again, terrible troubleshooting. If your computer loses Internet connection, there are NUMEROUS options to fix that connection…restarting anything is the last resort.

Again, just too many frustrations and I’m done with blackberry as soon as I’m able to get out of my contract (it’s so bad I’m actually WILLING to pay an early termination fee so I can get rid of this phone).

Good luck for anyone who decides they are going to tough it out with BB.

@djorn and @Semone

It sounds like your OS is corrupted – you need to download and install desktop manager onto your computer and the latest BlackBerry os from your carrier.

Once you have those installed you can wipe your device and start fresh – your problem should then be fixed.

Here are a couple links to help you with the process:

http://www.bbgeeks.com/blackberry-guides/step-by-step-guide-to-upgrading-your-blackberry-os-88196/

#16799 Aby on December 22nd, 2009 at 9:14 am

My BB 8900 keeps scrolling up erratically, without even touching the trackball. This usually happens when data is being transmitted (i.e. the arrow at the top right corner flashes)And it affects the chat window on the blackberry messenger the worst. For instance, when i’m in the middle of typing in the chat window, it begins scrolling up so fast, and stops once it reaches the top, and i have to keep pressing ‘R’ to return the cursor to the bottom. This is a constant pain, and I even attempted reinstalling the BB Messenger, thinking that was the problem, but that solve nothing. HELPPP!!!

#16826 Cooper on December 23rd, 2009 at 10:27 am

When your BB starts doing that you need to do a battery pull – replace it after 30 seconds or so.

My camera of my curve 8310 seems to have stopped working. The colors are weird and when i try taking a picture a white screen comes up and then the phone stops working for 10 seconds. When i exit the white screen to go see the picture there is a 2MB file with absolutely nothing on it. Help?
Also, my phone won’t turn on with the media card inserted in it. And when i try turning on Media Card Support it switches off by itself.

#16852 anna on December 24th, 2009 at 9:11 am

my blackberry has lines which have appeared on the screen. i cannot see my screen properlyx

Cooper
#16854 Cooper on December 24th, 2009 at 9:26 am

Try reformatting your media card – it definitely sounds like that is the problem.

As for the camera acting up, this can usually be solved with a battery pull – if that does not resolve the issue then backup the data on your BlackBerry and reload your operating system to start from scratch.

#16858 Cooper on December 24th, 2009 at 9:56 am

Ahhh – yes – sorry for the misunderstanding – ok so what provider do you use ie AT&T, Verizon, Orange etc? I will track down the right OS for you. Please email me at marketing @ BBGeeks.com so that I can send you specific instructions and a link to download the latest software for your device.

We will get your Pearl back up and running for sure.

my black berry pearl keeps on flashing different applications. If I’m making a call before I finish dialing the number it automatically send the first one or three digits that I just started dialing. I also realized that the roller ball is giving a little problem what should I do should I flash it.

#16880 Josh on December 25th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

I bought the Blackberry Tour as my first ever Blackberry. Overall I like it, but a couple annoying glitches have arisen:

1.In the camera mode, the trackball zoom in/out feature stopped working. I called the store and somehow they had me install an update (took a couple hours, did overnight). The zoom feature was fixed. But now it isn’t working again.

2.When typing a letter/number when on the home screen, the letter/number appears twice even though the key was hit once. This does not happen when in the contacts mode or phone mode, but only from the main screen. Very annoying when I’m trying to call up a contact from the main screen (always have to backspace to erase the duplicate character).

3.Intermittent problems uploading a photo to facebook from the phone (icon shows that upload process is happening, but it never completes and photo is not uploaded).

Any advice would be of great help to this new Blackberry user!
Thanks!

#17014 Cooper on December 30th, 2009 at 9:56 am

The first thing I would suggest is doing a battery pull – remove the battery while the device is still powered on then replace it after 30 seconds – your camera should work again.

If this problem crops up again, try locating the camera on the back of your device and applying firm pressure to the camera – on occassion this has been known to resolve the issue.

My blackberry is frozen the keypad. I looked it up and it maybe because it got wet, as i take when im in the shower but i put it near the sink, they said its probably like this because of the steam. the keypad is frozen so i cant wipe it manually i wondered if there is a place at the back of the device where i can do something or i should just let it dry out?

#17213 Cooper on January 4th, 2010 at 10:41 am

There appears to be a couple things wrong.

1. Try reloading your Operating System – here is a link to some instructions for you:
http://www.bbgeeks.com/blackberry-guides/step-by-step-guide-to-upgrading-your-blackberry-os-88196/

2. replace your battery – the icon that is showing up indicates that your battery does not have enough power to run the device. This could be caused by a dead battery or there may be some sprite left on the connections for the battery itself. First clean the battery connections and try plugging in the device for a full night – use the wall charger. If you still have the problem then head out and try a new battery at the store.

Cooper
#17217 Cooper on January 4th, 2010 at 10:52 am

I have no idea what this error message means. It has to be from a third party application on your device. I would search for the offending app and delete it.

Cooper
#17230 Cooper on January 4th, 2010 at 11:38 am

@ DreamingDragon
Try this:
go to your profiles, select loud then a menu screen comes up – scroll down to phone then a new menu opens up , in the out of holster part go down to volume, if it is set to high place it to medium, do the same for in holster , then press return – and save

#17253 Silly on January 4th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

Random, but I can’t figure out if the BB 8900 should show a diagram of a phone key pad so I can dial a number for example 888 AOL-CITY. should I have a keypad letter breakdown abc/123 memorized? there has to be an easier way, right?

Cooper
#17299 Cooper on January 5th, 2010 at 10:06 am

@nikki

I suggest going back into your browser configuration settings and ensuring that they are correct (everything checked except “Allow JavaScript Pop Ups”)

Once you are done there do a battery pull on your device while it is still running. Replace the battery after 30 seconds and you should be good to go.

Hey everybody just picked up the Blackberry Curve 8330. I am having issues with the ringtones. The phone will ring and vibrate when I get a call then nothing 30 minutes later. Ill pull the battery out put it back in then it works. Then 30 minutes later it does the same thing. Anyone have any ideas how to permaneantly fix the problem so I dont have to keep taking the battery out? Thanks

#17587 Blake on January 11th, 2010 at 7:57 pm

Also if it matters the phone is from Sprint.. as I stated after about 20 or 30 minutes if i receive a phone call the phone will not ring. I even try to go to the media player and listen to ring tones and it will not work. Then I have to take the battery out put it back in and it works for another 20 or 30 minutes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey so I have a bold9000 it’s a little over a year old, usually works great but all of the sudden there is a problem with the camera. The pictures dont save and the screen is strange colours with flickering lines.I’ve tried restarting, taking the battery out, making sure it was on the correct settings…nothing. could there be water damage? or could this be from dropping it a lot? Please help! thanks

Cooper
#17610 Cooper on January 12th, 2010 at 10:57 am

@Stephanie

This may be caused by damaged hardware from dropping it or it may be caused by a software glitch.

To rule out a software related problem I suggest you back up all of your data and existing media then wiping your device and reinstalling the latest os available.

If the problem continues then it is a hardware malfunction and you will need to look for a replacement.

The delete button on my blackberry has just stopped working, i dropped j20 all over the cover and the phone stopped working but recently all buton action was recovered but the only button that doesn’t work is the delete. What can I do?
I don’t thin I can live without my blackberry for 2 weeks if it gets taken to the doctors!

Cooper
#17649 Cooper on January 13th, 2010 at 10:06 am

@Melissa Try a battery pull to see if the functionality comes back. Aside from that you may want to try taking the device apart to see if there is any visible damage under the keypad that could be causing it not to work.

you can find instructions on taking most Blackberry models apart by searching for your model plus terms like “remove keyboard” or “dismantle” on youtube.

If your software is up to date and you have checked all of your profiles to make sure they are not set to silent then it appears you have a hardware issue.

You will most likely have to get the device replaced.

When your BlackBerry freezes like that just do a battery pull while it is still on and replace it after 10 seconds.

Cooper
#18183 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 10:40 am

The LH on your screen just indicates that the screen is locked using the keyboard lock.

As for the flashing when locked – that sounds like a software glitch. Try a battery pull to see if that clears the issue. If not then I suggest updating your Os to the most current one offered by your provider.

Cooper
#18184 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 10:43 am

Sounds like your software has been corrupted to some extent. I suggest backing everything up and reloading your operating system using Desktop Manager. If the issue persists then you may need to take the device in to your carrier for a repair or exchange.

Cooper
#18189 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 11:39 am

@Dinia try doing a battery pull and follow the steps laid out here to free up some memory on your Pearl – let me know if it clears up the issues you are having.

#18191 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 11:44 am

@jenni – not sure what is causing that white screen to show up but try accessing through m.facebook.com if it persists.

Cooper
#18199 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 12:28 pm

@anita when you mentioned you turned the phone off and on again did you do this by pulling the battery or just a standard power down. Try pulling the battery while the phone is still powered on. Your zoom should be back to normal once you put the battery back in (wait 30 seconds).

Cooper
#18201 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 12:34 pm

@borgy try changing your settings to direct/tcp and entering in your apn settings

Cooper
#18202 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 12:41 pm

@logan yup your os is corrupted and you will need to reload your os. All data on your phone will be lost.

going forward it is a good idea to make regular backups of your data – I do mine weekly.

Cooper
#18203 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 12:52 pm

@nik – well now that is a new one for me. I am not sure what is happening there but you may want to try a couple things.

first – do a battery pull to see if that clears up the issue.

if the problem persists you will have to reload your OS and start from scratch. This does not sound to me like a major problem but more likely symptomatic of a glitchy os install.

Cooper
#18208 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 1:33 pm

@Nicole try doing a battery pull while your device is still powered on – replace the battery after 30 seconds. This should fix the browser issue

Cooper
#18209 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 1:34 pm

@blaine you might want to look at apps like BlackBook to password protect/ hide specific items on your BlackBerry.

http://www.bbgeeks.com/blackberry-applications/blackbook-lets-you-hide-contacts-from-prying-eyes-883507/

Cooper
#18210 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 1:38 pm

@Desous try plugging it in overnight – I suggest using the wall charger – that symbol means your battery is completely drained or corrupted.

If the problem persists after an all night charge then you will most likely have to get a new battery.

Cooper
#18212 Cooper on February 1st, 2010 at 1:41 pm

@TT try reloading your OS – I think it may be corrupted by the sound of it

#18222 BigShipEmpress on February 1st, 2010 at 5:39 pm

Hey, i have a Blackberry 8900, and basically theres a little chat bubble at the top of my screen, but it DOESNT have an asterick, i’ve tried the pull out method, i’ve checked all my messages and emptied my inbox..etc NOTHING WORKS, how do i get rid of it? PLEASE HEELLPP :(

Cooper
#18230 Cooper on February 2nd, 2010 at 10:29 am

@BigShipEmpress If you have a custom theme installed on your phone it could be causing this. Switch back to a default theme and do a battery pull. The bubble should go away. You can then go back to your custom theme.

Sometimes custom themes have a hard time adjusting that icon.

#18260 Rob on February 3rd, 2010 at 10:07 am

Wow, great site. I’m on BB Tour #2 now and it is also acting up. Intermittent signal (1X/1XEV fluctuations in downtown Boston!) to frequent “hour glass” displays and freeze ups. Trackball issues are also still there. Not sure what to do now. I had to fight Sprint to replace phone 1st time around for free, but now I doubt they will do the same. My Curve 8320 on T-Mobile never did this. I thought the Tour was supposed to be faster and have more memory. Laughable.

#18287 rlopez on February 4th, 2010 at 8:46 am

Hello, I just got my blackberry storm and have noticed that something sounds like it is loose in it when I pick it up and it is moved around. Also, the touch screen seems to shift (slide) back and forth and side to side. Never seen a loose touch screen. Are these traits normal or do I need to take it back? This is my first blackberry so not sure what to expect.

Cooper
#18290 Cooper on February 4th, 2010 at 9:49 am

@rlopez I would absolutely take it back into the store and compare it to a brand new device to be sure that what you are describing is standard or not.

It definitely sounds like you have some hardware flaws so check it out right away.

#18327 Cooper on February 5th, 2010 at 10:54 am

@yassin You can receive files via bluetooth but what most folks don’t realize is that you have to actively tell your BlackBerry to receive the file.

Next time try using Media -> Press the menu key and select Receive Using Bluetooth. Then initiate the send from the device you have paired your BlackBerry to.

@Riaz in order to receive you actually have to go to your media section and press menu – receive using bluetooth

Cooper
#18380 Cooper on February 8th, 2010 at 10:51 am

@jordan Try doing a battery pull and / or switching back from a custom theme (if you are using one) to a default theme. That problem is common and usually fixed by one of these two actions.

Cooper
#18385 Cooper on February 8th, 2010 at 11:41 am

@giancarlo try doing a battery pull while the BlackBerry is still on. Replace the battery after one minute – that should sort out your keyboard issues.

Cooper
#18386 Cooper on February 8th, 2010 at 11:53 am

@Jean Alexandre You should be able to connect to your device and back everything up using Desktop Manager. Once your data is backed up it can be transferred to your new device when you buy it.

My blackberry’s battery sometimes runs down very quickly because the little clock at the center of the screen that is displayed when you switch on your phones keeps coming up. Whenever this happens my phone discharges within a couple hours without usage and gets really hot as well. I don’t know how to stop that little clock from coming up. I have no idea what application it’s trying to run. I only recently bought the phone and haven’t installed anything other than bbm upgrade.

my phone beeped meaning I had a email I didnt check it for a few minutes when I did the phone was off I turned it back on( thought maybe it went dead even though i had battery) and it went to main screen and froze, nothing happened when you push any buttons then after 2 minutes it goes off by its self , you can turn it back on and it starts again then freezes then goes back off what do you think is wrong, is there any way to get the contact list off?

Cooper
#18594 Cooper on February 16th, 2010 at 10:06 am

@Bethany – I suggest trying a battery pull to see if you can clear up that glitch. In the event that you can not get the device to power back on without freezing you should be able to connect to Desktop Manager and backup your data from there.

Cooper
#18599 Cooper on February 16th, 2010 at 10:41 am

@Kieran If you pull the battery while the device is powered on and replace after 30 seconds or so you should regain all functionality.

Cooper
#18603 Cooper on February 16th, 2010 at 11:05 am

@latoya Try this:

Leave the device to charge 2-3 hours, and then, still connected to the USB cable, remove the the battery from the device a few seconds and reinsert it. If it boots–leave it to charge to 100% (check Options > Status for the percentage).

If it doesn’t boot–try using a wall outlet charger if you are not. If you are connected via USB to the PC, make certain that you have Desktop Manager (or the USB device drivers) installed, which you can download below.

Make certain your USB cable is connected to one of the PC’s main rear USB ports. Not a USB hub, nor a monitor USB port, nor a USB port on the front of the PC.

Cooper
#18607 Cooper on February 16th, 2010 at 11:30 am

@John B

This is absolutely a hardware problem. The first thing I would do is pull out the trackball and ensure that all connections below it are clean and there is no dirt on the components below. Pull the battery after you have cleaned it .

Put the device in a bucket of rice for a couple days. If there is moisture in the device it can cause the problems you are experiencing – rice will absorb that moisture. Pull the battery immediately after turning the device on after drying.

Wipe your device OS and reinstall from scratch.

These are suggested steps to try before resorting to sending it in for a replacement under a warranty if you have one.

@kimberly You may have a dead battery on your hands. This happens on occasion.

I suggest bringing your BlackBerry to a local store and see if it will boot up with one of their batteries. If yes then you will have to purchase a new battery.

If no then I suggest reinstalling your software and leaving the device plugged in over night.

Good luck!

#18729 Nicole on February 21st, 2010 at 3:16 pm

Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a pink blackberry curve 8310. Just yesterday i set it down on my table while i was washing the dishes. All of a sudden, it seems it has shut down or something!I tried the hard reset (i took the battery out, put it back in after 5 mins, let the hour glass do its thing, and as soon as it reached the password homescreen thing) but as soon as it did that i tried to input my password and NOTHING HAPPENED! it’s as if it froze because it wasn’t even flashing. So i kept repeating the hard reset. Finally i read someone that had a similar problem, and they used RICE. I put my phone in rice to absorb any water it might have came in contact with and i took it out this morning.. But now all i have is a still not working blackberry curve with rice stuck inside -.-

Anyways , basically the keyboard and trackerball (when i click) is frozen at the homescreen.

Any ideas ? All are welcome!

peace.

I have an 8330. I am being sent my third phone due to the same problem. My phone stops all sounds. No ringtone, no alarms, notificaton. Checked my phone yesterday and I had missed 9 calls, all updates from Facebook, and my email account. Not one sound came from the phone. I can’t hear anything from the speaker, on Bluetooth, or earbuds. My friend has the same phone and never had one issue. I have the Orange and he has the Burgandy. That is the only difference.

@juan I suggest checking the connections by the battery and making sure that they are secure and that the battery does not shift while in place.

I also suggest upgrading your operating system to the most recent available.

If you have a memory card inserted in your device it could also be causing the reboot. Ensure that it is properly formatted.

good luck.

@lauren You have managed to corrupt the operating system on the BlackBerry. Just plug it into your computer and run desktop manager to reload the OS and you will be back to normal

Hey, I have a BB Bold 9700 for tmobile and am having an issue. Sometimes when I call my friend or she calls me (she also has a Bold), the phone won’t ring or display an incoming call but it shows that I have a missed call. Or she sometimes get Call In Progress.

Any thoughts? It’s really annoying when we’re trying to call the other but nothing goes through.

#18890 Barbara on February 26th, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Hi,
Well, i’ve been looking in so many websites but I still haven’t found the solution to my problem. Well, the problem is that recently, my blackberry bold 9000 just died ! Yes, Just DIED ! I was texting and it turned off forever ! At first, I thought it was the battery, so, therefore I put to charge for the whole day and night, but that wasn’t the problem. Can you please help me ? I’ve been on this problem for over 5 months !

#18897 Michael on February 27th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

I have the blackberry curve 8900 smartphone and it completely froze. When i took the battery out and put it back in it loaded up and said varifying security software. Once that had done it asked me for my pin but i couldn’t unlock the phone i tried both methods of unlocking it but neither worked and when the backlight goes out you cant get it back unless you plug it in (as the phone is still on) or by taking the battery out and putting it back in. Now i dont know what to do

Cooper
#18947 Cooper on March 1st, 2010 at 12:32 pm

@Barbara – I had this exact same thing happen to my 9000 – It came back to life when I got a new battery. I am not positive that this is your issue but I do suggest taking the phone into a local dealer and asking if you can try one of their batteries in yoru phone to see if it boots up.

Hi I am having trouble with my BB9550. Whenever someone from my stored contact list calls me just the number and the city/state will show up. I end up answering my phone like that person is a stranger. Please Help Me!!

Cooper
#19241 Cooper on March 3rd, 2010 at 9:59 am

@cassandra Options>Security Options>General Settings then scroll down to “Content Protection”. If you have content protection enabled you have to change the “Include Address Book” field to NO.

Also – Go to Call Log > menu > options > smart dialing > Make sure country code is the right one

Also – change the number length to reflect how many numbers that a local number has

If none of those work – look to see if there is an OS upgrade available to you .

Cooper
#19245 Cooper on March 3rd, 2010 at 10:11 am

@eric This is either a hardware issue or you are dealing with low system memory. read this for ideas on how to free up some memory – let me know if it fixes the camera issue.

PLEASE can someone help me…
I have an 8310 curve and very suddenly it is losing it’s GPRS signal. I have contacted my service provider in South Africa and have done the HRT so many times…
On a hard boot, GPRS signal comes back, but the disappears and goes to gprs…which disconnects me from BIS…
What could be the problem?
Is my battery braking down? Is my handset faulty? Is it a memory problem?
I am at my whits end…
I know there are ppl out there with the knowledge…please help :)

#19984 Cooper on March 8th, 2010 at 10:23 am

This sounds like it could be one of two things.

1) your hardware or software may be failing – try upgrading your OS to the latest available

2) you are in an area that has poor coverage – if this is the case there is not much you can do.

#20001 Mary on March 8th, 2010 at 6:17 pm

I have the BB Curve 8520… It’s been saying I’ve had 1 BBM unread message. I’ve shut it off, pulled the battery, deleted all my messages and cleared my phone out.. Yesterday it went up to 2 unread messages, and now it’s at 3 unread.. When I get a new bbm the count goes up.. I’ve switched themes and put the original theme back and it’s still there.. I’m ready to rip my hair out!!! HELPPPP!!!

#20082 Cooper on March 9th, 2010 at 9:57 am

@mary it sounds like you are experiencing a known bug with the .57 version of BBM. I suggest you downgrade to the .33 version and it should solve this issue.

#20628 Cooper on March 11th, 2010 at 9:38 am

@Pearl try doing a battery pull to see if it starts working again. If not you may want to look at upgrading your os to ensure you have the most recent version available.

Cooper
#20629 Cooper on March 11th, 2010 at 9:40 am

@atif That sounds like a problem with your service provider rather than the phone itself. Unless you have installed some type of call blocking application and configured it wrong I would suggest contacting your provider and seeing if they can see any issues with your account setup.

I got a new blackberry curve last Tuesday. I put it on charge this morning and then went to get it and it was so hot that I could hardly touch it. I took it off charge and it just got hotter and hotter, then went off. It won’t fo anything now.

#20698 Laura on March 11th, 2010 at 2:07 pm

I got a blackberry cyrve 8530 yesterday. is there a way to adjust the alerts..like if I miss a text, can I get it to beep at me periodically until I read the message? Also, when a text comes in, my phone remains black and only lights up when I tap the center pad and then I have to go into the text app to view the text. Can I adjust it to automatically backlight when a text comes in and will it display at least a partial of the message without having to specifically chase it down in the text app? Thanks for your help.

I have a Blackberry 8320 TMobile phone.

i have a problem with my BB Storm 1. Was chatting with someone yesterday and suddenly, the screen and all the characters started breaking up and after some minutes (after pulling out the batteries twice) i observed that the screen characters flipped over in the reverse direction. Now, i cab view anything on the screen, its just blank. I think i had a virus attack, what should i do?

#20812 george on March 12th, 2010 at 7:48 am

i just scanned my BB using Avast anti virus installed on my system and it found a Trojan Horse virus named Win32:Kavos [Trj] with the model as 100311-1, 11/03/2010.
What should i do?

@simon – firmly apply pressure to the trackball and roll it in the opposite direction of the one that is sticking.

@Amanda This is not normal – well some heat is but that seems excessive. I would get it replaced.

#20918 Cooper on March 12th, 2010 at 2:53 pm

@tony I would suggest grabbing a more recent release of the OS from another vendor and installing that to see if it solves the issue.

you can grab them here – remember to backup everything before the update and to delete the vendor.xml file.

Cooper
#21632 Cooper on March 15th, 2010 at 8:59 am

@Jenny Sounds like something has been corrupted. First try a battery pull.

If that does not fix it I say wipe the device (after backing up all your data first of course!).

Load up the most recent OS for your device and you should be back to normal.

Hi,

I have a Blackberry Bold 9700. It has been very good to me so far, until the last few days. The scroll pad on the phone doesnt respond at times. Today has been unresponsive all day and its really annoying! Why is this?

Cooper
#21716 Cooper on March 16th, 2010 at 9:29 am

@nathan If you remove the battery and plug the phone in via usb (use the rear usb on your pc) you should see the LED flash which indicates there is power running to the device.

If you launch desktop manager at that point it may recognize the device – at which point you can upgrade software and backup if necessary.

If you see no LED flash then it indicates a hardware issue and you may have to bring the phone in for repair/replacement.

#21723 Jit on March 16th, 2010 at 11:28 am

Hi Cooper.

I have tried the battery pull all day today, but its still unresponsive. I have no idea what could have caused it either!

I have an annoying problem on my blackberry 8310. When I’m listening to music, if i plug in my headphones, for some reason only the right side of the headphones works. #21757 Cooper on March 17th, 2010 at 11:27 am

@paulo – are you using the standard pair of headphones that came with the BlackBerry?

Cooper
#21758 Cooper on March 17th, 2010 at 11:29 am

@jit I would do a complete backup of your device – contacts data etc – then reload the os – if it is still unresponsive after that then it is absolutely a hardware issue and you will need a replacement.

#21770 Paulo on March 17th, 2010 at 4:46 pm

@Cooper no I’m not. The phone was given to me by my uncle who first used it and lost the headphones. I’m using the same pair of headphones I use on my PC (Samsung headphones) to listen to music which work perfectly. They just don’t work so well on the Blackberry. If I pull them slightly out, I can hear from both of the sides of the headphones, with a weird sound and a small buzz on the background.
Do you think that the stereo jack is damaged?

This problem has come up recently for me, and has only become more and more frustrating. I have a blackberry tour (verizon), after every missed call my phone will not allow me to make any calls, every time I do it says “call in progress”. I’ve tried turning off the phone but it doesnt help, the only way to make it stop is by having someone call and answering it. Also when I click the “end” or “power off” button it makes a beeping noise and takes me to my call log. Any solutions?

Cooper
#21798 Cooper on March 18th, 2010 at 2:27 pm

@patrick this is a known bug and is OS based. You will have to update your OS to the most recent one available.

Look here for new OS files – you can use one from any carrier as long as you delete the vendor.xml file.

@Keyss Try a battery pull while the device is on to see if that brings it back to normal. Replace the battery after 1 minute.

Cooper
#21803 Cooper on March 18th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

@paulo The jack is standard size by definition but is actually slightly larger than standard from what I can tell.

Your issue may be that that particular pair of headphones just doesn’t fit “right”. Try a few pairs to see if the problem exists all around. If it does then it more than likely means you have damaged the jack in some fashion.

#21835 Paulo on March 19th, 2010 at 1:53 pm

Cooper, I’d like to thank you for all your help. You were really helpful, I have one last question though: In case the jack is damaged, is it possible to replace it on the board?
Once again, thanks a lot for all your help. The post is great and so is the website. Keep up the good work.
