This all started in February, when RIM sued Samsung over their BlackJack PDA. They claimed that the name was far too similar to BlackBerry. We’re not exactly sure about that (Black Jack is, after all, a popular card game). But we are sure that the BlackJack looks exactly like a BlackBerry, to the point where we once asked someone, “oh, which model of BlackBerry is that?” That case eventually settled. Now RIM is targeting LG for their new line of PDA, the Black Label.
The LG phones are sold under a name that is “confusingly similar” to the BlackBerry, Research In Motion said in a complaint filed today in federal court in Los Angeles. Research In Motion seeks a court order barring LG from using the Black Label name and unspecified damages.
Like BlackJack, Black Label has multiple meanings, the most common of which is Johnny Walker scotch. And then there’s Black Label Society, a band fronted by Zakk Wylde, who just so happens to be one of our favorite guitarists.
Never heard of the Black Label? That’s because it’s only available in Korea. So it appears that RIM is trying to protect its interests overseas as well.
