When you’re the top smartphone maker in the country, you’re bound to run into some patent suits. It seems like they’re unavoidable nowadays. The guys from Techdirt will tell you that this is because of poor patent policy, allowing flimsy patents to pass through. I’m not sure if that’s the case here, but RIM has filed a preemptory suit against IP Com, a patent-license company.
RIM wants the court to decide that they didn’t infringe on any of IP Com’s patents. Further, they want to prevent IP Com from ever suing them over any kind of patent infringement. It’s a bold move by RIM, who could be using the move as an intimidation maneuver. IP Com has since countersued.
As I said, there are and will be no shortage of patent suits against RIM. Hey, they’re getting richer, and other people and companies want a piece of that pie. Motorola and RIM each filed suit against the other earlier this year, while IP Com has sued Nokia.
Sue, sue, sue. Doesn’t that suggest something is wrong with the system?
