Yay. Just what I want to talk about this morning: Another BIS outage. This one didn’t seem to be as widespread as the one from last week. This one, though, didn’t get to the corporate users, who have an Enterprise server backing them up. So clearly there’s a bit less of an outrage. Still, even a small outage is not good news for RIM right now, who is still trying to stave off the slew of media-posed questions regarding the company’s reliability. And it doesn’t help that they claimed that it was the result of maintenance.
“RIM did perform regularly scheduled maintenance on BlackBerry Internet Service that took longer than originally expected, and some BlackBerry Internet Service customers may have experienced slower delivery of e-mail earlier today. The majority of customers would not have seen any impact.”
That last line does little solace for those that did face an outage. And continuing to blame the outages on these “routine” happenings isn’t doing anything to help RIM save face.
I dunno. Maybe if they got a bit more specific about the outages. Maybe if they told us what they were doing to ensure that an outage like this won’t happen again. Maybe if they explained matters a bit more. Maybe then people would be more understanding.
But these things are rather unpredictable, so it’s tough for RIM to do much about it in advance. But if these came during upgrades and maintenance, maybe sending out a note before these processes take place, noting that there’s a chance service will be lost for a short period of time, maybe people would be more understanding.
Lots of maybes here. And lots of ways RIM can correct this increasingly frequent problem.
