Not satisfied with the BIS Gmail two-way sync

Posted by Joe on May 21, 2010 | 11 comments | Filed under : BlackBerry Issues

In March RIM rolled out BlackBerry Internet Service version 3.0. Like other BIS updates, this offered a few changes. Chief among them, at least for Google users, was two-way syncing for Gmail accounts. Google and RIM made it quite simple to receive Gmail emails on a BlackBerry, though not without problems. We covered that in pushing your Gmail vs. the Gmail BlackBerry app, one of our most popular threads. The inclusion of two-way sync in the new BIS package would make the question moot. Except in the case of advanced inbox functions, pushing Gmail would make a lot more sense with a two-way sync. Unfortunately, it hasn’t quite worked as expected.

First, RIM delayed the feature. They introduced BIS 3.0 to their North American users in late March, but two-way Gmail sync was not included. It was promised as a later update, slated for the spring. That didn’t leave me very optimistic, because the spring is a pretty ambiguous timeframe, and if it gets delayed we wouldn’t know until sometime in June. Yet RIM did come through, beginning their two-way sync roll-out earlier this month.

It took a while, but earlier this week I noticed the two-way sync taking effect. It happened after a long day at the office, after which I picked up my BlackBerry to see only a handful of unread messages. Normally I see a number that gets above 50 and sometimes approaches 100. Clearly, my BlackBerry was now marking as read emails that I had already viewed on the Gmail server. Sweet. No longer would I have to deal with a red blinking light after I’d read an email on my computer.

Yet I don’t think the sync is quite up to par. It seems like the sync happens once an hour, if that. Is this normal for other email services? I’d think that with a two-way sync it would update pretty quickly. Yet, despite having marked an email as read on my computer, the red light on my BlackBerry continues flashing for the full 15 minutes. Even after it’s done flashing the email still appears as unread in my BlackBerry inbox. I haven’t quite figured out how long it takes to show up as read in both places, but again, it seems like at least an hour.

Like many web workers, I use Gmail for most of my email needs. I dealt with the pain of a one-way sync because 1) I love BlackBerry and Gmail a lot, and 2) there was a promise of two-way syncing. The second, however, appears to be of little worth. Has anyone else experienced this? Are you as annoyed as me?

Several months later and it still doesn’t work well. I’m on Verizon if that makes any deference. Wish I could get an Android but my company pays for the BB.

I am not very satisfied with the 2 way sync. Seems to take several hours or so, sometime then it does seem to function well at times.

I will probably go to an adroid based phone when my contract is up, unless this mess is sorted out. Would also be nice to have other google apps available, e.g. docs and picasa.

What happened to two-way sync?? When I started using it 2 or 3 weeks ago, all worked fine. Now, nothing syncs and I refuse to go through all my gmail deleted messages and re-delete them on my storm…but the inbox icon is starting to frustrate me. does anyone know how i can fix this and get sync back?

I’ve been using the Gmail app for accessing email on my tour, and I’ve generally been happy with it. Based on these experiences, would anyone recommend switching to BIS, or still wait for improvements?

David, no, I didn’t re-add. But I did go back to the normal connection once they fixed the bug where you’d see your sent emails, so that’s probably why you’re seeing nothing.

I can read a message on my BlackBerry, and it will be marked read on my Gmail. But I can’t seem to ever get a read message on Gmail to mark it read on the BlackBerry. I set up my Gmail manually as IMAP a while back, and I’m wondering if that is affecting my two-way sync. I’ve also never installed the Gmail plug-in. Did you delete and re-add your Gmail account after 3.0 went live?

Do we gotta do something to get BIS 3.0 onto our phone or is it done automatically by BB to our phone? Please let me know. Thanks.

On the other hand, from the last 2 weeks i’ve been seeing the gmail plug-in updated because it now shows emails i send myself on my bb gmail inbox and also updates the sent items. But yes, the two way sync does happen only once every couple of hours i think.

I’ve noticed it comes and goes on my AT&T 9000. Some days it marks them read almost instantly, other days they never get marked read. If I reply to an email on the web, it’ll show up in the email thread on the BlackBerry very fast…though many times it does not show the original email as read.

I keep hoping it is just some final bugs they have to get worked out and that soon it will all work smoothly.

YES. VERY ANNOYED. This has annoyed me so much that I’ll probably go Android later this year, especially after seeing their i/o keynote yesterday(wow, btw). this is a very simple request that, for some reason, cannot be accomplished

I’m experiencing the same issues, and am just as disappointed. I’ve wanted to recommend Gmail to many people, but the BlackBerry outbound sync just takes too long. Definitely more than an hour. But it does work. Messages are flagged as read or deleted appropriately. The conversation thread doesn’t always work right though.
