All the big news during the week has been France’s BlackBerry ban. Despite assurances and reassurances from the folks at Research In Motion, the French just want none of it. Apparently, an e-mail that travels through non-French servers is just too much for the overly paranoid nation. But hey, it’s their decision, so let them do as they will. Just don’t bring anyone else into it, okay?

Too late. There is now a German organization pushing their government to issue a similar ban. The Software-Initiative Duetschland has the same complaints as the French: it’s too insecure because e-mail passes through non-German servers. So what, is the BlackBerry supposed to be banned in all but three countries?

Their solution? Use German-based services and servers to route e-mail. Of course, that causes a whole host of logistical problems. How are they going to sync e-mail? How compatible are they? We could probably think of a hundred questions that are left unanswered by SID.

We do have a question, though. The BlackBerry has been around since when? (That doesn’t count; it was a rhetorical.) Why, then, did it take you this long to figure out that the e-mail was routed through servers in Canada, the US and England? Or, perhaps they always knew, but were/are under pressure from certain activist groups to take action.

We think some answers on those questions are due. Issues like this shouldn’t just appear out of the blue for a product/service that has been around for the better part of a decade.
