CashForBerrys.com is an alternative to BlackBerry repair

Posted by Joe on November 3, 2009 | 8 comments | Filed under : BlackBerry Issues

I’ve been unfortunate over the past few years to have BlackBerry devices with properly functioning hardware. My screen, battery, and other parts have continued working (though I have had multiple software issues). There are a few options if your BlackBerry is damaged, though none of them are attractive. The two most common: get it fixed or get a new one. I’m sure you can see the dollar signs already. Buying a new BlackBerry, especially without the subsidy of an upgrade, can be expensive, but repair can be an even bigger relative cost. In my daily BlackBerry reading, I came across a site that gives you a third option: sell your defective model and put that money towards a new model.

The site is CashForBerrys.com, and after reading about it yesterday I did a quick search around to find out about potential scams. I didn’t find any, though I didn’t find many review. It is part of the Cash For Laptops family.

The above image is what they offered me for my Curve 8330. It’s worth more than $60 to me, so I’m not even considering it. But if you have a BlackBerry that you don’t need any more, that $60 can come in handy, especially if you’re putting it towards the purchase of a new model, subsidized or not. The only problem is that if your BlackBerry has serious electronic defects, you’ll get less. If my Curve had a defective screen, I’d get just $10. That’s probably not worth the effort of shipping it.

It comes down to a cost-benefit analysis. You have to factor in the repair price, the time your BlackBerry will not be of use to you, how much a new model would cost, how much you can get from CashForBerrys, etc. There’s also the issue of market price. CashForBerrys has an easy system for getting money for your device, but you might be getting less than you can. Selling your BlackBerry on eBay, while a longer and more complicated process, can get you more money.

If anyone has used CashForBerrys, please leave a review.

I shopped and shopped for a quote. They offered $255 for my blackbery 9700. They emailed me a link to “log in” to….click on it and I got send to the mobile site, had to email them to get the correct link and password reset. It says on the website that the turn around time for paypal was teh day after they received it…when I had emailed, I’d asked if they’d gotten it (as the USPS link NEVER works online, it’s so retarded) and they said it was due to be in their posession the next day. Well, that was 2 days ago. Technically I should be getting paid for my pretty much brand new (no scratches etc) for my phone…so, I have NO idea what to do next, I just know that after reading some of these I’m a bit concerned and tempted to call.

I had the same experience as jeff and greg007. I have used them to sell my 8330 as well as a three year old laptop. They offered $100 for my blackberry and after I sent it in, the “assessed” it and told me they would only offer $20 (did the same thing to my laptop). They said I had scratches on the screen–total bull, I had a screen protector on from day one. I told them just to send it back, so then they offered $30. I accepted just to be done with them. I would encourage folks to stay away.

I think you’d be better off with a more reputable company (gazelle.com for instance) who would offer you a lower estimate, but then actually pay that amount.

i sent in a blackberry last week after they offered to pay $155 on the website. when they got my phone, they sent me an email saying my phone is only worth $20. of course i requested that my phone be sent back to me, then they sent another offer of $50( a $30 increase tell me they were and are still playing games). i still requested my phone back and its being 4 days, i am yet to get a email nor my phone.

Beware that their web site is more polished than their operation. The site will quote, say $60 for a phone. After mailing it to them, they’ll send you an email saying that it’s scratched, damaged, cracked, and therefore worth much less than the quote. If you decline their lowball offer, they won’t respond. Try calling, and you’ll be sent to voicemail. In the end, you’ll have to fight tooth and nail to get your blackberry back. I think they plan on having you cave in and accept their lowball offer.
