This has been an ongoing story for months now, and has mostly stayed off the pages of BBGeeks. I suppose it’s because not too many people who read the site are interested in what’s going on in India with the BlackBerry. Given the latest news, though, I think it’s worth a peek. The news: RIM will not allow the Indian government to gain unfettered access to BlackBerry messages. Backstory and how it applies to us after the jump.
Backstory: RIM wanted to enter the growing Indian cell phone market. The Indian government, however, was concerned about the security of the devices. Which comes off a bit strange, since many of us consider BlackBerry among the more secure mobile devices.
The company and the government have been going back and forth, trying to come to an agreement. There have been rumors of deals from both sides, but this latest bit of news seems definitive.
New Delhi’s concern has been that terrorists can use these devices to communicate. And you know what? That is certainly a concern. But they could do that in the United States, too, and our government isn’t demanding a backdoor into BlackBerry’s service — though it appears they might have one into a wireless carrier already.
So what does this mean for India’s 400,000 BlackBerry users? Not quite sure yet. I guess we’ll await a reaction from New Delhi.

While this matter can be very difficult for most people, my belief is that there has to be a middle or common ground that we all can find. I do value that you’ve added pertinent and sound commentary here though. Thank you!
