@Chaun

You can buy a BlackBerry by itself off of ebay or almost any other online market place.

That being said - when you bring it in to get it hooked up you will still have to sign up for a BlackBerry data plan to use your email and BlackBerry messenger etc.

Ultimately you will have to sign up for a contract in order to use the device to the fullest.

I live in Malaysia & as well as the Blackberry is concern, the blackberry device only being monopoly with these 2 giant telecommunication companies, named Celcom & Maxis. The bad thing about the blackberry in Malaysia is, the device sold to the end user with bundle. Meaning to say,consumer must commitment at RM188x24 months + blackberry device at RM599.00. I wish to know how if I wish to buy blackberry unit alone

I carried a BB 950 (well several, actually) from early 2000 until my IT staff pried it from my hands when the BES no longer supported it.

I would still carry it today if I could. It was a near perfect device - it did one thing extremely well.

And yes, it used a single AA battery. The 80386 was actually powered by a small lithium battery in the device. The AA charged the internal battery.

Just to add a bit to the history of the earliest devices, the original Interactive Pager was internally nicknamed 'bullfrog' and the 850 was referred to as the 'leapfrog'.
