A short while ago BBGeeks.com was introduced to the good folks at BlackBerryChick.com. Since we are a team filled with Geeks of the male persuasion, we thought this might be a nice opportunity to bring a little female perspective to the pages of the site.
The following is a guest post from BlackBerry Chick. As you can see, it’s a woman’s take on the geekdom of BlackBerry. We hope that this will be the first in an ongoing series of posts that are geared specifically to women who own BlackBerry devices.
A BlackBerry is like a good purse…fully adaptable to wardrobe changes, can match just about any occasion or outfit, and looks good no matter what you’re wearing!
I’m not sure if you’re like me, but not only am I loving my BB Curve, but I change it up often. My curve is fully customizable, and since owning it, I’ve saved tons of cash by not subscribing to all of those AT&T applications for ringtones, themes, wallpapers, etc. I sometimes feel like my Curve goes through about as many wardrobe changes as I do on a daily basis. There are so many ways you can change your device, and I’ve listed just a few ways that my curve goes through it’s daily “wardrobe changes.”
1. Ringtones
There are a few ways to add on ringtones, either OTA (over-the-air which is directly from your phone via a link), have it emailed to yourself, or via the desktop manager media manager on your PC. My suggestion is for those that may not be very familiar with their device, to find a site that can send the link to their phone directly. A couple of my favorite sites are coolblackberrythemes.com and myxer.com. These are only 2 of the many sites where once you’ve registered, you simply pick a ringtone of your choice, and have it sent directly to your device. Once it’s received on your device, you simply save it (hopefully to a SD card) and add it to your ringtones.
For those of us that are technically savvy, you can check one of the many BlackBerry sites for a listing of free — yes, FREE — ringtones that can be downloaded to your PC’s Desktop Media Manager, and then transferred directly to your device via USB in the same way you synchronize your device. You can try the CrackBerry forums for links to ringtone download discussions. Best of all, this is FREE. Did I mention FREE? Did I mention that I said bye-bye to media net for AT&T once I got my Curve? I wasn’t sure if I’d mentioned that. From there you can assign ringtones to people, for any profile by accessing the Profiles Advanced menu. So when my friend who always thinks I’m mad at her calls….I know it’s her because I hear TuPac singing…”I ain’t mad at ‘cha”.
2. Skins
I don’t do custom skins…I tried it and it made the Curve look a bit cheesy. Now that’s only my opinion, I know some people that like them…but for me, cheesy is just not my thing.
[ed note: if you are interested in skins, check out Cooper's post on BlackBerry skins and the various options available to you.]
3. Housings
Changing your housing, or the hard case to your phone, requires great skill. You can seriously maim your device, so changing the housings are NOT for the weak at heart. There’s Colorware, which seems to do good work, and I’ve heard good things about them. And then there’s my girl, BeckyMae. Pre-Curve, Becky would laugh at my addiction of phones. Post-Curve, Becky is a true believer, and not only traded in her Pearl for a Curve, but also started mass producing these awesome colored housings that distinctly sets your curve apart from all the others. I’ve had skyBerry Blue, PurpleRainBerry, a two-toned pastel pink and blue, a teal and many more, all courtesy of this BB artist extradonaire.
BeckyMae has developed an airbrush technique to create gorgeous housings! Check out her site to see more examples and to see what the masses are saying about her work. It does my heart good to have an AT&T employee see my phone and ask what kind of phone I have. Changing the housings are not easy, but there are tutorials on youtube that show you the “way”.
4. Themes
I change my themes all the time. There are so many fab-u sites that you can go to to find your perfect way of expressing yourself. Most of these sites you do have to register for, but most of the themes are FREE. Did I mention Free? And there are others that are premium and charge a small fee ($4-6), but definitely worth the cost.
I change my theme for holidays, special events, or whatever mood I’m in that day. Some of my favorite sites are: Themes4BB , coolblackberrythemes.com, and BlackBerryThemes.co.uk. There are many more, but those are my personal faves that I can always go to when I’m in the mood for a curve “wardrobe change”. The themes are based on your OS (version of the operating system like 4.2, 4.5, etc.) and ensuring that you’re using right version for your phone, will help you make your device, as personal as a good purse.
Ask yourself, what’s on your Curve?

I would like to change my housing but I know better than that play with fire like that! Maybe one day. :)
I think there are more women using Blackberrys than people realize.
I am still trying to find decent feminine themes that aren’t aimed at teens. I really have no urge to turn my Bold into a “Hello Kitty” haven. Sheesh.
