Thanks for this.
I have been using my BB Bold's 3G internet connection through my laptop for 6 months now and it work great. I use a bluetooth adapter to connect to the Bold whenever im outside of a wifi zone i can connect to. Much more convenient than having a separate modem stick.

PDAnet is better, IMHO, and cheaper than MobiShark. http://www.junefabrics.com/blackberry/index.php

TetherBerry now has tethering for Mac non-bluetooth mode. http://www.tetherberry.com

"Unfortunately, no current BlackBerry models on either carrier works on the Rev. A upgrade."
Both Verizon and RIM state the 9530 Storm is EV-DO Rev A and 3G tethering is supported via both USB and BlueTooth. Did the research for this article turn up that the Storm does NOT do Rev A when used for tethering?

Another thing to keep in mind for the "road warrior" is that with an aircard, you can be working online AND make/receive phone calls. If you get online with tethering you don't have that ability, which with a lot of remote presence (i.e. web conferencing) applicatons means you can't have both the data and the audio since the audio relies on a phone call. What isn't clear to me since I don't have one is if the 9000 Bold can have a 3G data connection and still make/receive phone calls, which was supposed to be one big advantage of GSM 3G over CDMA 3G. Anyone know?

The Blackberry Storm on Verizon is a Blackberry that offers Rev A speed, contrary to what this story says. However, I understand why some may not consider it a Blackberry.

"Verizon BroadbandAccess and Sprint’s mobile broadband offers Rev. A download speeds of 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps, with bursts up to 2 Mbps, and 500 Kbps to 800 Kbps uplink. Unfortunately, no current BlackBerry models on either carrier works on the Rev. A upgrade."

This is incorrect. The blackberry 9530 Storm is an EVDO Rev A device, and tethering is well over 1Mbps for me.

you said: "no current BlackBerry models on either carrier works on the Rev. A upgrade" -- but thats not true.

The BB Storm on Verizon is Rev. A -- see for self at:
http://www.evdoforums.com/thread11370.html

Also, you didn't mention that some BlackBerry's like the Storm are able to work while connected to cellular routers like the popular units from Cradlepoint. check this out:

This is a pretty well written article. I use my 8100 on T-mobile as a tethering device out of necessity. At times it does kinda feel like I'm using the internet of the late 90s early 00s because of the speed (or lack thereof) but it does provide me with internet on my computer without having to purchase additional hardware or data plans. I guess it's all about cost-benefit.
