After reading this I think I will stick with my Virgin Mobile Slice. Its smaller and easier to carry than a Blackberry or I-Phone and gets nationwide great reception plus its pay as you go so I pay about $20.00 every other month, it only costs me $120.00 per year versus about $1,200.00 or more per year for a Blackberry so I save about $1,080.00 per year! Cha ching! Besides I already have a computer so sure sufing the net on my phone would be fun but is hardly necessary.

I think the article is a little short sighted. It's making the assertion that ${device} costs ${amount} over the course of the contract, which seems to be holding the opinion that the service provided for the MRC of the contract is in fact worthless.

One of the reasons the handset subsidy model works so well is that it's win-win, and the contract allows them to essentially defer the majority of the handset price over the term of the contract. The real 'cost' of the BlackBerry is really ( ${handset upfront} + ${value of MRC of services you wouldn't already use} ) - ${value of service provided to you}, which is probably only the BlackBerry Internet data plan at an average of $30/month ($720 over 2 years)

So assuming that your time is worth $20/hour, and you save 1 hour per workday that's $260 per year, or $520 for a 2 year contract.

($199 + ($30 * 24)) - 520 = $399 deferred over the 2 years that you spent to get the BlackBerry.

Great article. It is one of the reasons that I bought my last smart phone, unlocked, off Ebay. I paid about a $100 premium for the GSM unlocked device. But I'm also not tied into a 2 year agreement, and can get off a plane in Europe, but a SIM, and am off and running locally.
