After posting our guide to creating custom ringtones for your BlackBerry, we were contacted by a representative of DJTone Inc. to inform us of all the great value added options available to licensed owners of DJToneXpress. The kindly provided BBGeeks with full access to the plugins offered, so I have decided to review them here for you in an effort to provide a complete picture of what you will receive in return for your hard earned cash.

There are 5 value added plugins in total. Since the plugin descriptions are quite lengthly, I will save you the hassle of scrolling down this entire page. Simply click one of the following links to jump right to the plugin description you are interested in.

Free Mobile Content

Summary:

A huge selection of free ringtones, wallpapers and animations is right at your fingertips once you have purchased a copy of DJToneXpress. The process of transferring these items to your BlackBerry (or any other supported phone for that matter) is quick and easy. You are given the option of saving to your desktop and uploading the files to your phone via cable, bluetooth or infrared, or sending a download link right to your phone for access via your mobile web browser.

The available content is broken down into four categories:

• Halloween | 2 tones | One spooky tone in the Saint-Saens – Danse Macabre, but the scream 2 tone is just annoying.

• Animals | 48 tones | Ever wanted the sound of an Angry panther coming out of your phone? now you can. Perhaps you want to have a goat or barking seal? Lots of great animal sounds here.
• Birds | 25 tones | A great selection of almost any bird sound you can imagine. Everything from chirping birds to geese and ducks.
• Ambient | 57 tones | All generic ambient grooves for your phone.
• Other | 23 tones | Various true tone sounds for your phone.
• Different | 45 tones | If you have ever had the desire to have the sound of a toilet flushing as your ringtone, this is the group of sounds for you. Not feeling the toilet idea, they have a bunch of other ones in here as well. Everything from Intergalactic space guns to an electric can opener.
• Rock | 11 tones | Generic rock guitar riffs.
• Bells | 10 tones | Bell sounds of all types, from xylophones to grandfather clocks and doorbell chimes.
• Instruments | 23 tones | A good variety here — classic sounds of guitars, drums, harps, pianos etc.
• Human Sounds | 26 tones | An interesting mix here of human sounds. You have standard applause and cheering, some screaming and some evil/spooky laughter. The tones that take the cake for me though are the snore tone, yawn tone and the tone which consists of someone eating raw carrots.
• Others | 14 tones | These ones are based on the theme “life on the farm”, there are mosquito and cricket sounds, wind and rain, all sorts of farm noises.
• Oldies | 17 tones | I am a little too young to recognize any of these tones, but with seventeen offerings in the oldies category you are bound to find one of your favorites.
• Cars | 10 tones | Mostly generic car horns and engines revving.
• Engines | 9 tones | They have all types of engines featured here, from jet engines to motorcycles and fire engines.
• Halloween | 21 tones | The generic “spooky” fare here. Consisting of screams, spooky laughter, groans and creeking sounds.
• Christmas | 4 tones | Classic Christmas standby’s We wish you a merry Christmas, bah humbug etc.
• Football Chants | 53 tones | 53 football chants from all of your favorites. England, Liverpool, and my favorite “The Referee is a Wanker!”

The Photo Maker

The Photo Maker plugin is a handy little widget that allows you to take any image you have saved on your desktop and convert it into a cellphone ready wallpaper in seconds.

The process is incredible easy. Simply select the desired image, and upload it to the online photo editor. The next step is to select the model of phone you will be displaying the wallpaper on from a drop down menu.

Once the image has been uploaded and the phone model selected, it is time to edit the image so your wallpaper looks just right. This process is quite simple. You are presented with a large version of your image and a capture area defined by a red box. You can move the red box anywhere within your image to choose exactly what appears in your new wallpaper. If you are having trouble getting everything you want in the defining box, simply click the zoom out button. Conversely, if you are getting too much of the image in the defining box, you can choose to zoom in until just the portion you wish is selected.

You will note that there is a “demo phone” positioned to the right of the image. This phone will provide you with a preview of what your new wallpaper will look like on your phones display. Clicking the save button will process your image and make it available for download. You will be given the option to send the new wallpaper to your phone, or download the image and send it to the phone via cable or bluetooth/IR.

The SMS Maker

This is another great value add. Many cellphone providers charge an arm and a leg for SMS messaging. This handy plugin makes it quite easy and affordable (ie. free) to send SMS messages to all of your friends. The catch is that you have to be at your pc in order to send them.

The SMS Maker interface is really quite simple. There is a field to enter your phone number, a dropdown to select your carrier and a text box to enter the message you would like to send.

Additionally, you have the option to create a list of contacts and edit that list over time.

A quick test of this plugin had a full SMS message delivered to my phone in less than a minute and a half.

Social Networks Posting Plugin

This is an interesting feature that allows you upload all of the ringtones you have created to your favorite social networks.

Supported networks include:

• Blogger
• Bolt
• Friendster
• HI5
• IMVU
• LiveJournal
• LostCherry
• MySpace
• TagWorld
• Xanga

With the obvious exception of Facebook, this list just about covers the youth oriented social networks. It is now easier than ever to share your ringtones with your friends and see what songs they have converted as well.

Using this plugin is really easy. The first step will prompt you to you select the Social Network that you participate in from the onscreen list.

The software will then generate a short section of HTML code which you will have to paste into the home page of the chose network.

When you have the code in place on your homepage, your friends will now see all of your custom ringtones. The best part about this plugin is that your home page will be automatically updated with any new ringtones you have created.

In order to place your ringtones on multiple social networks, you will have to repeat the above process for each site. As each site requires code in a different format, you will have to have the software generate the scripts individually.

The Phone Music Maker Plugin

This plugin, while not entirely relevant in todays age of media phones, is still a decent value add.

The Phone Maker plugin is designed to convert standard audio files into smaller sized files to be played on your cellular phone. The benefit being that you will not have to carry your mp3 player alongside your phone (for those of you without mp3 functionality). Or if you do have a media phone, it allows you to compress the audio files so you can fit a larger number of songs on your phone than possible with standard mp3 files.

The process of converting a song through the Phone Music Maker plugin is quite similar to the process of creating a ringtone with the DJToneXpress software.

Simply navigate to a supported audio file on your hard drive or inserted audio cd and click the upload button. Once uploaded, the software will audit the file and compress it into a phone friendly format.

Once your file is complete you will be given the option to access the uploaded file from your phones browser by way of hyperlink, or to send the created audio file to your phone via bluetooth, Infrared device or cable.
