The amount of money we spend on these smartphones and we're too cheap to buy a little insurance (skin, case, whatever)? Not me. It's downright LUDICROUS to expect a Blackberry to survive a drop to asphalt or concrete or tile or ANY hard surface people! Protect your shxt or don't whine later when you drop it! I tried to convince my wife of this when she got her Pearl, but NO, she just HAD to have it "skin free". And dropped it at least a dozen times. It was beat up something AWEFUL. Lucky for her it developed other problems, and when VZW insurance provided a free replacement unit I was able to convince her to protect it this time around.

Oh, and folks, invest the two bucks (or less) in some screen protector films! Heck, my wife got 15 pre-cut and perfectly sized to her Pearl screen for like $8 shipped, well worth the money.

Not sure what kind of car you drive, but when you are opening your trunk, it starts from the closed position (lid meets the rear bumper) which is only a couple of feet from the ground.

I have an 8830, which is awfully slippery without a case. I've dropped it ad least twice. The one that really sticks out to me- because my heart about stopped- was when I was typing one-handed (so the device was about chest-height) and it squirted out of my hand onto a hard, tiled floor. My device has several dings on the edges, but it's still whole and functioning. Though it's on the heavier an bulkier side compared to all the latest BlackBerry devices, I have grown to really appreciate the hardiness of the 8830.
