All told, the first release of the YouMail client for BlackBerry didn’t go over so well with the critics. It’s a great idea, of course — any visual voicemail service is better with a dedicated application. The kinks and bugs in the original YouMail client, however, caused a number of users to opt for VyMail’s YouMail client. Perhaps YouMail’s client is worth a second look, though. They’ve updated it, and though some of the improvements are vague, I hope that they fixed the many problems which turned people off earlier this month.
First off, it’s now compatible with the Storm, which is a big plus for them. With a growing number of Storm users, and with the device already having a paid visual voicemail app, they can gain a good number of subscribers with this. That is, if they’re able to fix the bugs that came along with the first version.
According to them, they did fix the issues, though the description is rather vague: “Addressed and improved numerous issues and reported by users including problems with the UI, connectivity and authentication issues.” Does this mean that the issues in question were fixed? Generally, they were of this nature, so it sounds like it.
Other upgrades include memory allocation — you can choose to store your audio in the device memory or on a microSD card. Users can control whether specific messages are played via the handset, the speaker, or a headset, and they can also control whether messages play automatically or manually. Same goes with how messages are downloaded: there’s an option for automatic or manual.
Honestly, I ditched YouMail last summer after testing out a few other visual voicemail services. If anyone in the BBGeeks community wants to drop me a line with their thoughts on the upgraded app, drop me a line: jpawlikowski, then the at symbol, bbgeeks.com.

I wanted to try YouMail, but the fact that Sprint charges turned me off right away. Not their fault, but would probably be the case with any app.
AT&T, Verizon, and T-mobile don’t charge for forwarding, only Sprint.
As an FYI, there’s a new version of the YouMail BlackBerry client that might be worth checking out. It now lets you sign up right from the phone, and it checks for voicemails every few minutes and they just appear in the inbox.
