We’re always looking for ways to find more free content on BlackBerrys. So it was much to my delight this morning when I saw a press release for QuickPlay Media, a company that provides free streaming videos to BlackBerry users. Just point your BB browser to videostreamsmobile.com and download their application. You’ll be watching streaming videos within minutes.
Of course, there are a few catches. First and foremost, while QuickPlay provides this streaming service for free, you’ll still be charged applicable data rates. This means if you’re on a limited data plan — which most are nowadays, even if that limit is 5 GB/month — you’ll be dipping into that pool to watch these videos. So beware your carrier charges.
Second, it’s only available on the Pearl 8130, which means you can only get it on EV-DO networks. In the U.S. and Canada, these include Sprint, Verizon, Alltel, Bell Mobility, and Telus.
“The mobile market is exploding – with new applications, devices, and services introduced to the world each day – and RIM is a company at the forefront of this rapidly changing marketplace,” said Wayne Purboo, CEO and co-founder, QuickPlay Media. “We are excited to continue our history of innovation by being the first to offer BlackBerry smartphone customers free access to our high quality video services.”
Sounds like a service worth checking out.

Come on RIM! Get off your duffs and get a 4.3.x OS out for the other EV-DO multimedia BB, the 8830. Oh, and WHEN can we see eithr an 8330 or 8930???
BBVdo.com has 1000s of videos from youtube, dailymoiton, metacafe that you can download with your BB browser and play in the BB media player! No application needed.
I agree with David, they need to update the program for 4.3+ OS and include BB 8330 plus all others as well
I just bought my first blackberry. It is an 8830 world edition through Verizon. I am trying to find streaming video for this model. It seemed that with the v4.2 OS this was impossible. This past week OS 4.5 became available for the 8830, which I promptly downloaded. It seems even this new OS did not allow me to use the Quickplay Media from http://www.videostreamsmobile.com. With new browsers like Bolt and Skyfire it would be great to watch the Daily Show or my favorite South Park episodes. There has been a long lag since any website seems to have talked about this problem. (Do a search, it seems all articles are posted from 2007/08). Since I’m a big fan of the BBGeeks team and the work you do, I thought I’d see if this would inspire you to give an update on the streaming video world. Here’s a heads up I found by digging around. I found an old blog which said you could get streaming video from http://www.mywaves.com (at the time it did not work on the 8830, but it works fine with the new OS 4.5). However their offerings are limited to clips less than 5 minutes and content that would only entertain people who never miss an episode of america’s funniest home videos.
Thank you and keep up the good work,
Rod Zimmerman
