It wasn’t long ago that we reviewed Vlingo’s speech recognition software. Despite some negative reviews we had read elsewhere (and some people hating on voice activated software), I came away impressed with the application. In fact, even my friends loved it.

Vlingo has fixed some issues and has added some features, and so has released a new build of their software. You can download the new version here. The most noticeable upgrade is the ability to forward and reply to emails and text messages, rather than just composing original messages. This one I know was a heavy request after the original beta. They’ve also fixed some connectivity bugs which caused timeouts and other lag issues.

Some quick stats on Vlingo, from June 2008 though now. Web search is the most-used feature, at 33 percent, followed closely by SMS at 31 percent. Twenty percent of users utilized the voice dialing, a feature native on newer BlackBerry devices. Just 7 percent used it for email, while 5 percent used to to launch an application or jot down a Note2Self. Honestly, if Vlingo could open more applications than just the ones that come stock with the OS, it would be a more utilized feature.

If you take Vlingo for a spin and notice something you want to see added for fixed, you can drop them a line. There’s also a place in the application itself where you can send feedback. Make sure to be heard on this. Vlingo has plenty of potential, and we want to see it realized.
