In last week’s News From The Wire we discussed the newest addition to BlackBerry app consumption, App World 2.0. RIM held an event last week at which they revealed the specific changes. Check News From The Wire for the complete rundown, but for a quick rundown here’s what we’re looking at. In addition to PayPal, App World will accept credit cards and carrier billing; apps will have specific QR codes for easy barcode scanning; and a BlackBerry ID will keep track of all the apps you download, not just the paid ones, so you can transfer everything from device-to-device and even carrier-to-carrier. Yesterday we caught a glimpse of the first video rundown, which really spells out the changes we’ll see once RIM releases the new version.

It looks like we’ll see a few more Top 25 categories, including updated apps. The rest of the video goes over most of the new features listed above. I wish they had demonstrated the QR code scanning, but it’s probably pretty straight forward. Otherwise it looks like everything is in order. As I expected, they didn’t make too many changes to the UI.
None of this, of course, is revolutionary. It will not, I’m sure, catapult App World past the Android Market and the iPhone App Store. I’m not sure that anything like that is necessary. RIM knows its user base. It has demonstrated that time and again, and the results speak for themselves. The new App World brings to the table many features that, yeah, probably should have been included in the original. But they weren’t. Now we can be happy that they are. I’m pretty excited to see the new App World first hand.
