The auto signature feature on your BlackBerry can be useful. Like the desktop email equivalent, it can append your contact information to all emails. The difference with BlackBerry is that it can let others know that you’re on the device, which helps explain why some messages are short (and lack capitalization in certain areas). In fact, that’s the default signature with most BIS BlackBerry devices. You can change the auto signature, but there are still issues. For instance, your BlackBerry appends the signature after all text, including forwarded and replied text. RIM hasn’t fixed this yet, but there’s an application that does.
The application, SmartSig, will place your signature in the appropriate place, right below the text you just typed. You can create different signatures for different email addresses, just like you can normally on the BlackBerry. You can then enable or disable this signature as you see fit.
Moving your signature to the right place is an important feature, but not the only one included with SmartSig. You can also create SMS signatures — though that is a feature available only on OS 4.6 and higher devices. It also makes for a better signature interface, rather than logging into your email settings or desktop BIS account.
The price is right, too. You can get SmartSig for just $1.50. That includes versions for OS 4.3.0 and 4.5.0, which does not include SMS signatures, and then for BlackBerry OS 4.6, 4.7, and 5.0, including touchscreen.
