Sccope turns your BlackBerry into a price comparison machine

I imagine that in the not so distant future, apps like Sccope will come standard on all smartphones. After all, you always want to get the best price on an item. But when you’re out shopping you might not have all the relevant information handy. Say you see the blender that your girlfriend has been nagging you to buy you’ve always wanted. Is that the best price you can find? Might it be cheaper at a store down the road? What about online? Sure, you have internet access on your BlackBerry and can do some manual checks, but that can be a bit of a pain. That’s why we’ll eventually see pre-loaded software that takes care of the comparison process. Until then we have third party apps, and Sccope looks like one you’ll want to try.

The basic comparison feature works simply. All you have to do is scan a barcode and the app will return prices from the retailers that offer the product. You can also search for products by UPC, name, or brand. If that’s too specific for you, the ability to browse products by category is also available.

Beyond basic comparisons, Sccope offers a few other features, including alerts that will notify you when an item on your wish list drops in price. It can also let you know when an item is in or out of stock. For even more savings they also offer coupons on a number of products. That will save you a bit of hassle — you do search for coupon codes when you buy items online, right? It seems like a waste not to.

There are a few limitations to the app. First, it’s not supported for the Storm. That seems silly, but I’m sure they’ll release a Storm version at some point. Also, while it works with OS 4.5 and above, the barcode scanning only works with 5.0. If your device meets these criteria, you can get Sccope at App Wrold for $2.99.

Storm needs a lot of special care when developing. It’s hard enough to make a BB app that is compatible with the huge number of keypad devices BB offer with OS 4.5 and up, and Storm adds even more complexity. I’m sure they’ll find time to make it work on the Storm eventually.

Never any love for the Storm :(

Seems silly. I think a lot of devs write the Storm off as being too small of a market share to worry about. Fact is, Storm users are *less likely* to be business users, therefore more likely to download consumer-focused apps.
