Not that I listen to the radio a lot, but I’ve been wondering why there’s been a lack of radio features for BlackBerry. Especially satellite radio. MobiTV has an XM option, but that doesn’t fly on the BlackBerry. This morning, though, I awoke to found an announcement of XM for your BlackBerry. QuickPlay’s OpenVideo offers 20 channels of XM, available through all major providers. The best part is that it’s $7.99 per month, which is a full dollar cheaper than MobiTV’s offering.
In addition to seeing a graphical display of the song title, artist, and album, QuickPlay’s OpenVideo allows users to see what’s playing on other XM stations. Even better, you can run the application in the background and listen to music while you take care of business on your BlackBerry. It’s available on the 8700 series, the 8800 series, the Pearl, and the Curve.
You can get your trial here.
It also seems that we’re a step closer to streaming terrestrial radio on BlackBerry. Radio Companion lists what’s playing on certain radio stations, though it currently does not have the capacity to stream audio. The company is hoping to get the application to that level over the summer.
Not only can you see what’s playing on other stations, but once the application is fully functional you’ll be able to have song details emailed to you, as well as have an option to purchase the song over the air. We’ll have more on this service once it full rolls out for the BlackBerry. For now, you can check out Radio Companion’s website.

Maybe you’ve been out of the loop, but the XM Radio option was announced last week.
Yeah. Just trying to catch up from last week. CTIA and all.
There are a couple of ways to get XM for FREE on smart phones. (provided you already subscribe)
Just a small correction about Nobex Radio Companion mentioned above – the web address for it is http://www.nobexrc.com (not the link up there) and it’s fully functional and thousands of users are using it. It can be downloaded OTA from the site.
[...] it would make sense for them to cater to that crowd. It’s been over a year and a half since QuickPlay began offering a limited XM, featuring only 20 channels for $7.99 per month. So what gives? I’m not sure what’s [...]
