New BlackBerry browser SkyFire in Alpha testing

Posted by Joe on May 13, 2009 | 8 comments | Filed under : BlackBerry Applications

Since the end of January we’ve been psyched up about the BOLT browser for BlackBerry. It promised a more desktop-like browsing experience, and through a few builds it has begun to deliver. While it’s not my go-to browser, there are many instances where I use BOLT to navigate sites which don’t render well on the default browser. Now they’ve got some competition. We heard about SkyFire a bit last month, specifically how it promised to be an even better browsing experience. After the jump, a bit more information about SkyFire.

That’s a screenshot from SkyFire. Kevin from CrackBerry, where I found the screenshot, apologizes for it being blurry, but that’s understandable. I mean, it’s freaking at least twice the size of my Curve screen, so of course it’s going to look off a bit (click the image for the full size). This allows us to see some detail, and the detail looks good.

Once a public beta becomes available we’ll certainly update with more information. Like BOLT, I’m interested to check this out. For most functions the BlackBerry browser does its job, but for more advanced Web browsing, I need something like BOLT or SkyFire on my phone.

@Silver Fang Yes it should be able to handle video in a similar manner.

Will the BlackBerry Skyfire be able to play videos in the browser like it could on Windows Mobile?

i had a similar problem with BOLT. My regular browser will load anything on even one bar, with bolt i HAVE to have 3 bars, which i never have @ home because t mobiles service is the worst. Also it freezes alot and i have to continuously push buttons before it works. Although, when it does work, the browsing experience is alot better than on the bb default browsers, for instance i cannot get on my t mobile from my browswer i must use a computer, BOLT allows me too. So there are ups and downs. I cannot wait to try skyfire.

I recently loaded up Bolt just this week. After reading how about how much better of a browser it was I thought I would give it a try. Unfortunately though after loading the app onto my 8330, the browser would not load any other page besides the home page. Did anyone else have this problem?…. I made sure to load the proper Blackberry version, and I did everything right, but I could not visit any websites.

You have to be invited to participate in the Alpha program for SkyFire. Unfortunately that leaves most people out in the cold until at least their Beta launch.
