Mobipocket adds over the air e-book downloads

When I first got my BlackBerry, the first thing I did was install the Mobipocket e-book reader. It was to be my cheapie version of the Amazon Kindle, an ultra-portable e-book and RSS reader. However, to my dismay, there was one feature sorely lacking: Over the air downloads. And because I don’t normally sideload content onto my BlackBerry, I didn’t take advantage of the service. (Also, it won’t read the e-books I download from Project Gutenberg.) Now, though, Mobipocket has finally introduced over-the-air downloads. Looks like I might have found a new outlet for on-the-go reading.

“The ability to find, discover and buy books, and have instant access to them from anywhere at any time, is the ultimate convenience for Mobipocket customers,” asserted Mobipocket CEO Martin Gorner in a statement. “In addition, we help customers make informed buying decisions by allowing them access to reader reviews and sample downloads. We are really excited to bring our ebook catalog, innovative features and the convenient OTA access to Blackberry users.”

The best feature is the ability to highlight and otherwise annotate the text. I’m a highlighting freak — people often wonder why my leisure-reading books are filled with post-it flags. So the ability to highlight, and then transfer the file to my computer, is an excellent feature.

Now that I can actually use the application, you can bet on seeing a review in the near future.

[...] I couldn’t fit the last installment on my screen, so that makes eight five-chapter installments of Huckleberry Finn for a buck a pop. Compared to normal ebook prices that might not seem that expensive — most new ebooks cost more than $8. But this ignores that Huck Finn is in the public domain, and therefore can be obtained free of charge. Seriously, here’s the book on Project Gutenberg. Download it from there and read it on Mobipocket. [...]
