Kindle app now available for BlackBerry

Since its release, I’ve tried to avoid the Kindle. I go through a book or two a week, and over the years have grown to love my paper babies. What would happen if I found out that an electronic reader was even cooler? A month ago I found out, and now I really, really want a Kindle. If I’m so inclined, I can get a start on building my Kindle library now, reading the books on my BlackBerry. Amazon has introduced the application, which allows BlackBerry users to access the vast Kindle book selection, over 420,000 total.

The app works just as you’d expect. You can browse through Amazon’s Kindle library, allowing you to search by author, title, or keyword. It also offers a pseudo-bookstore experience, allowing you to read the first chapter before you buy. That’s why I try to consolidate my bookstore trips. I always end up reading a ton of passages from various books, and it kills time like few other activities. You can access the books you buy on your BlackBerry, your computer, or a Kindle device.

Once you have the application and a book, the application works just like the Kindle. You can create annotations, one of my favorite features, and the device will remember what page you last viewed. Everything you do to the books on your BlackBerry you can sync to your Kindle and computer.

The biggest downside is that magazine, newspaper, and blog subscriptions are not available on the BlackBerry app. To download the free app, head to http://www.amazon.com/blackberry to send a link to your Berry, or go to http://www.amazon.com/blackberry from your BlackBerry browser. The application is available for the Bolds 9000 and 9700, Curves 8520 and 8900, Storms 9530 and 9550, and the Tour 9630.

*Yawn*

Yet another application that is available to North American and/or Canadian customers only… And they wonder why people are considering and/or have switched to other smartphone operating systems!

BTW, I’m using OS 4.7.1.61. The problem appears to related to the total size of all applications installed on the BB. The bug is present on OS 4.7.1.61, currently VZ release. (At BlackBerry Forums search for “Warning: Kindle for BB gave 552 error on 9630″)

I’ve been using the Barnes & Noble eReader for sometime now and must admit that for a paper book lover, I got hooked. There were limitations as buying books online off the BlackBerry because of the limited mobile site. They also kept saying they were working on eMagazine and eNewspapers but still hasn’t happened. I absolutely love how the Kindle App looks and I like the design of it. Shopping withing the application is a big plus. Only issue I have so far is I don’t have the dictionary look-up like with B&N. No magazine and newspaper subscriptions yet.

I plan on using this app instead of getting a Kindle. I just don’t believe in using multiple devides right now. My BlackBerry Tour is my MP3 player, laptop away from the office and eBook reader.

I installed it on my Verizon Tour 9630 this morning. So far it is working very well, and I’m very happy to have an ebook reader on my phone again. (I had execution problems with the other readers I tried on my Tour.)

@Paul It looks like it only saves to the SD card, that’s the only place there is an ebook folder created.

Is the app able to save book data on the Micro SD card, or will it eat into the precious main memory?

The Kindle BB app killed my Tour 9630 yesterday. While trying to fix it I noticed a post on crackberry.com forum of someone else’s Tour that had been bricked, as well. Beware!

I read a little on my Storm2 and it was fine, but i’ve never used a Kindle to compare it to.
