Keep up with your favorite publications with PressReader

Posted by Joe on November 12, 2009

In the digital age many of us have become accustomed to RSS readers. They’re simple, they’re convenient, and for the most part they deliver just the information without all the frills. But sometimes people want the frills. After all, it’s not so long ago that we went to the end of the driveway to pick up the newspaper every morning. To that end, there is Press Display, a service which allows you to view your favorite newspapers from around the world, right down to the formatting. You download the publication, meaning you can read it offline, a huge, huge plus for the traveling worker. Their latest development, as we learn from jkOnTheRun, is PressReader, an application which allows you to view those publications on your BlackBerry.

Miss the graphics from the newspaper? You can see them through PressReader. You can also simulate the turning of the pages, since everything is laid out as it is in print. The application features an intuitive zooming function, making the process even easier.

Some of the features they tout:

  • Program automatic downloads of publications as soon as they are published
  • Enjoy intuitive navigation, including rotate, zoom and pan
  • View full graphics or easy-to-read text views
  • Access on-demand audio
  • Search across titles
  • Jump to next page using article hyperlinks

To make matters super clear, they’ve created a demo video. It shows exactly how the application works, and why it’s a great solution for people who read on the go.

You can get PressReader at App World for free, though subscriptions to publications does cost money. Still, you’re getting something for your money above what you’d get from a simple RSS feed. Also, if you do download it, make sure to check out the setup instructions on the App World page. PressReader is only available on the Curve 8900, Bold 9000, and Storm 9500 — but since the application is free, I’d recommend giving it a try on any OS 4.6+ device.
