Keep track of text messages from your desktop

Posted by Joe on January 22, 2009

I imagine this scenario is familiar to some. You’re at your desk and you hear your phone beeping/vibrating. Someone has sent you a text message. So you have to nab your phone, scroll to the message, read it, and possibly reply to it. This isn’t a horrible inconvenience if it only happens occasionally, but if you use text messaging heavily, it could become bothersome. For these people, R10Software has introduced a new application: SMSLink. It lets you connect your phone to your computer so you can receive and reply to text messages without interruption.

SMSLink works with both Mac and PC because it connects via Bluetooth. This means no wires to run from your computer to your BlackBerry. Plus, as they say (and I appreciate this): “We would never leave our mac brothers out of the game.” Once you’re up and running, all text messages will appear in their application. So once you have a new one, you can wait to respond to it, or you can click over to the window and type your response. It’s a much smoother transition than having to physically pick up your phone.

As you can see from the screen shot, your text messages are stored in tabs, so you can wait to respond until you have free time. This way you can avoid the distraction of hearing the SMS notification on your phone. You can just respond as you would to any instant message.

Clearly, this application isn’t for everyone. The $8.95 price tag might deter other potential users. If you are interested, though, you can get it from their website. If anyone has any questions or feedback, leave them in the comments. If there’s enough curiosity about this, I’ll consider doing a full review.

The real question is will it handle IM’s from Blackberry Messanger?

Sounds cool, but do SMS’s sent via this app show up as sent messages on your device? If so, even more cool!

I have to say, been using this application for about a week now. I’m really sold on the simplicity and functionality of it. When the BB buzzes I don’t have to pick it up, all I do is pull up the app and send out my replies. The setup is fast and easy and the software runs really light.

Up until now I always picked-up my phone to see who send me an SMS and to reply to it. Normally this didn’t bother me, unless I was sitting at the keyboard. Using this it’s so easy! Just popup the app, see what the message is and reply instantly, without taking your hands of the keyboard. A real timesaver that makes the interruption of receiving and replying to messages less distracting.
