In this past week’s BlackBerry News From The Wire, I made a foolish mistake. I mentioned that there were some details on the BlackBerry Application Store, which was true. In the same paragraph, though, I said that CrackBerry had a hands-on take. Yeah, I was confused. The Suite and the Store are, in fact, nothing alike. So why don’t we take this opportunity to explain the difference between the two?
Blackberry Application Store
We actually talked about this two weeks ago in News From The Wire. There are two entities at play here: The BlackBerry Application Storefront and the BlackBerry Application Center. You’ll be able to purchase applications from both, but they will be run differently. The Storefront is a RIM-run operation, exclusively accepting PayPal as its method of payment. This will be available both on-device and on the Web. The Application Center will be run by the carrier, including payment. This will be an OTA-only deal, and might only be available for the Storm and Bold. So, to make this clear, both the Application Center an the Application Storefront are market places where you can purchase applications for your BlackBerry device. As you’ll see, this is nothing like the Application Suite.
BlackBerry Application Suite
The Suite shares two words with the Center/Storefront, but that’s about it. The Application Suite is an application which allows you to run a Windows Mobile phone like a BlackBerry. As Boy Genius Report so poignantly points out: “You’ve literally got an entire BlackBerry on here.” While they have complaints about it, in conclusion they note: “It works, and works extremely well.” It only runs OS 4.2 at this time, which doesn’t bode well for touchscreen fans, but think of the implications if they get OS 4.7 running for the HTC Touch Pro. Why would you ever, ever use Windows Mobile ever again? WinMo has some lofty projections for their market share come three years from now, but if RIM can fully implement the Application Suite, it’ll be a no brainer. Run the BlackBerry OS on your HTC device. Done.
