Some people just like their phone to stay silent unless a call is coming in. Not long ago, we talked about silent dialing on your BlackBerry. Yet the keypad isn’t the only place your BlackBerry makes a sound. How about when you click the camera? Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear you can make this silent in the Options menu of your camera. That means a third party app: BerryAnnoying.

Unfortunately, not even this is a perfect solution. As they note in the product description, this will not work with CDMA models, which means I’m right out. But for you GSM users out there, you might want to give this a shot — while it’s still legal.

It’s a pretty basic application. You buy it, download it, and install it. When you want to use your camera, you use the BerryAnnoying icon instead of your regular camera icon. When you snap a picture, you’ll hear no shutter sound. Brilliant!

As to the legality comment above, New York Rep. Peter King introduced a bill this week which would force camera phones to make a sound “within a reasonable radius of the phone whenever a photograph is taken with the camera in such phone.” The rationale:

“Congress finds that children and adolescents have been exploited by photographs taken in dressing rooms and public places with the use of a camera phone.”

This bill has no cosponsors, though I’m not sure if that means anything regarding its probability of passing.
