@Josh

Unfortunately you have identified the two largest flaws in the Google Maps app for BlackBerry as far as I am concerned.

Neither of the things you want to do is possible with Google Maps just yet.

How can we set Google Maps as the default Map application on a BB? I have downloaded and installed Google Maps 3.2, but when I go to Options - Advanced Options - Maps - Default Service, the only option is still Blackberry Maps.

The other thing that bugs me about Google Maps on the BB is that when you search the map and come up with a listing, there is no way to save it to your contacts, only as a favorite. On my old treo, I could save a listing as a contact and then always have it's info without going back into the maps application.
