Google Maps 3.2 with layers now available for BlackBerry

Over the summer, Google released Google Maps 3.2 with layers for Windows Mobile. On top of the normal map view, users can overlay traffic information, public transit routes, local items of note including local search results, Wikipedia information, Google Latitude friend locations, and more. You can also use multiple layers for even more information. I caught on BlackBerry OS yesterday that Google has now extended this upgrade to BlackBerry users.

Their accompanying video helps explain how to use layers better than I possibly could with text.

To upgrade, or get Google Maps for the first time, go to http://m.google.com/maps from your BlackBerry browser.

@Josh

Unfortunately you have identified the two largest flaws in the Google Maps app for BlackBerry as far as I am concerned.

Neither of the things you want to do is possible with Google Maps just yet.

How can we set Google Maps as the default Map application on a BB? I have downloaded and installed Google Maps 3.2, but when I go to Options – Advanced Options – Maps – Default Service, the only option is still Blackberry Maps.

The other thing that bugs me about Google Maps on the BB is that when you search the map and come up with a listing, there is no way to save it to your contacts, only as a favorite. On my old treo, I could save a listing as a contact and then always have it’s info without going back into the maps application.
