Industry coverage, news, original feature articles, how to guides, videos, podcasts and reviews of BlackBerry service providers, software, accessories, hosted exchange providers and more
I wasn’t sure whether to save this for News From The Wire, but it’s a little too cool to pass up. Via Lifehacker, I found out that Wikpedia has finally launched a mobile version of their user-generated encyclopedia at mobile.Wikipedia.org. I’ve discussed a Wikipedia quick launch previously, and how I use it extensively. However, it always brought you to the standard listing, which sometimes didn’t look right on my Berry — especially my old 8830, which didn’t even have OS 4.3. Now, though, Wikipedia comes through beautifully.
The front page is just a simple search box with the Go button to get you started. That’s not the most interesting part, though. If I wanted a cleaner home page, I could continue using the quick-launch icon. The beauty of Wikipedia mobile is the format of the individual articles.
The downside is that there isn’t a disambiguation list at the top of the article. So when I typed in “blackberry” it brought me to the fruit. Capitalizing the Bs sent me to the relevant article. Just a slight pain, of course, since most of us don’t bother to capitalize while tapping our Berrys. Most of the time, the device does it for you when it’s needed.
A plus is that it only loads a bit at a time. For example, the BlackBerry entry is 13 pages long. That can be a good thing if you only want the first snippet and don’t want to load the rest of the page.
Any thoughts on this?

I think it’s a great idea seeing as how I’m a big fan of Wikipedia! I love all the info it offers and now it’s BB friendly!
there was already a mobile version of wikipedia that came out a few YEARS ago.
http://wikipedia.7val.com
or you could use Wapedia – which is a wap UI for wikipedia – works great on every BlackBerry since years: http://wapedia.mobi
I’ve been using http://en.mobile.wikipedia.org for, like, a year already. (I also have Wapedia bookmarked for even longer. I don’t know if it gets you to the same info.)
