Edit spreadsheets for free on your BlackBerry

Posted by Joe on December 5, 2007

We don’t know what we’d do if you couldn’t view spreadsheets in your BlackBerry. They arrive as attachments so often, and it’d be a major pain to have to transfer the file to a PC before viewing it. Editing, however, is still a problem, especially for cheap-os like us who don’t want to dish out $100 for eOffice. However, a new spreadsheet editing solution is here — and it’s free. Yes, Simprit is offering it’s community version of GridMagic for free. And while it’s not as functional as eOffice, it suffices for the cheapskate in all of us.

Of course, there are limitations to the free version. You’re limited to 50 KB attachments via a public server. You also can’t email the company for tech support — it’s all up to you to figure out, via the FAQs and the community forums. And there are no upgrades available to the free version, so while the premium versions see improved functionality, you’ll still be stuck with the same program. You also won’t have access to advanced spreadsheet features.

But you can enter data and resize rows and columns, which is sometimes all you need — surely all we need in many cases.

Did we mention that it’s free?

In any event, the upgrades aren’t that expensive, should you be looking for something more advanced. The Standard edition is just $19.95. That’s a good deal, even for cheapskates.
