Consolidate your membership cards with CardStar

It seems like every major retailer has a rewards card. At one point I remember having CVS, Rite Aid, Shop Rite, Pathmark, and a couple of other merchant barcodes on my keychain, plus my gym membership card. It can make a keyring a bit cumbersome and, quite frankly, unsightly. Most of these places offer wallet-sized cards, but that’s just more junk to fit in your wallet. There’s a new BlackBerry application that might help out if you’re in the same predicament. CardStar creates a scannable barcode on-screen, so you can use your BlackBerry as your universal membership card.

Adding membership or reward cards is an easy process. Once you open the application select the option to add a new merchant. You can then select from hundreds of national and regional stores. You can also add your own, in case CardStar does not list the merchant you’re looking for. Once you do that, you just type in the barcode number from your membership card, and it’s stored within the application.

When you want to use the card, pull up the application, select the appropriate merchant, and the bar code will come up. You can check out their FAQ for tips on how to best scan the barcode. They say it’s best from a handheld scanner, rather than a flatbed one. Really, I’m just impressed that it can scan at all.

You can get more information at CardStar’s website. If you want to download the application OTA, head to http://bit.ly/9vazpr.

you can make the bar code appear with a menu option, really simple. The numbers are just the default. I was really looking forward to this app (to lighten my keychain) after seeing it on an iPhone a while back, but I just tried it last night at Stop & Shop and couldn’t get the scanner (Tried 3 of them) to read my screen at all (bb9700). I’ll try a few more stores before giving up, but so far disappointed.

By default, it appears only the numbers are displayed. You have to turn on the actual barcode viewing method (I think they need to set this ON by default). Anyhow, in the menu there is an option called “Show Barcode” — pick that and you’re done!

JerryD:

1) “Via CrackBerry” means I found the application from that site.
2) People tend to write something when they’re dissatisfied. It works fine on my BlackBerry. So please, quit it with the condescension.

BlackBerry 9000 – OS 5. No Barcode displayed – just the number I entered very large. The app may have won the award for being the quickest to be deleted – EVER!

Since this is the second posting with the same comment, I’ll say it now – I won’t be installing a program written about only here. Don’t you check this stuff out first?

I was excited to try this app, but disappointed by it. I entered a few numbers (using merchants from the known list) but all the app did was display the number in a large font, without any barcode. It also kept trying to access my phone number “for my convenience” and alter my security settings.
