Okays, so you might have the BlackBerry Facebook app, but can it tell you where you friends are? No! You’d have to ::gasp:: call or text them to find that out. Well, not anymore. BlackLine GPS has launched Blip, a geo-location social networking application. It’s free for anyone who has a compatible BlackBerry with active GPS. Once you add your BlackBerry’d friends, you can see where they are, so long as their device is armed. My favorite feature (in a very, very sarcastic manner): The ability to view the speed at which your friend is moving. If a train leaves California…
I’ve expressed in the past my reservation for location-based technology that allows others to see where you are, or allows you to see where others are. It just seems…intrusive. So you can only imagine my dislike for a complementary service to Blip: GPS Snitch. For just $399.99, you can get a GPS box that you can put anywhere, and track the location of it.
Of course, this is being touted as a security measure. And you know what? That does have some merit. For example, there were visible signs of an attempted break-in of a car in my driveway this week. Had the thief succeeded, finding the car would have been a snap if GPS Snitch was hidden under the passenger seat.
However, it doesn’t take much thinking to realize the powerful spying capabilities this has. Want to catch your cheating tramp of a wife/pig of a husband? Just find a way to hide GPS Snitch on ‘em.
As with a lot of new technology, there is a line between good and evil. This is especially true of location-based devices, which have implications on our right to privacy.
You’ll need OS 4.2.1 or better to run this. It works with the 8700 series, the Curve, Pearl, and 8800 series. Not all features are available with all models, though, so you can check the specific compatibility of your device.
