You know, you’re not stuck with the default notifications on your BlackBerry. There are applications out there which allow you to customize your alerts, selecting different colors for different types. We reviewed BerryBuzz in March, and determined that it was a worthwhile app if you want more control over your alerts. I just got an email yesterday noting that there is a new version of the program out, 2.1.22, available now. It adds support for a ton of instant messaging clients, including ICQ, AIM, Windows Live, Google Talk, and Yahoo Messenger. It also adds battery indicators — when you’re fully charged, when you’re charging, and a customizable low-battery indicator. After looking at this, I found another similar app which caught my eye.
Color ID has a bit different take than BerryBuzz. While the latter integrates into your profiles, allowing you to change your color indicators where you change the rest of your settings, Color ID acts as a separate application. You can assign a color, or a series of colors, to different types of messages, or to different address book entries. So this way you’ll know not only which type of messages resides in your inbox, but you can also figures out who it’s from without even lighting up your screen. The app syncs with your address book, so when you set an alert you can add it quickly and easily.
I still do recommend BerryBuzz for those who want to have a deeper control of alerts, but Color ID looks like it has potential. You can check out Color ID at the BBGeeks Store for $5.99. You can get the new BerryBuzz for four cents less. Reviews of either are more than welcome, as always, in the comments.
