@Douglas - I would try a couple things. The first is a battery pull. If you can use your keyboard again then disable compatibility mode and try again.

I just upgraded from BB Tour to BB Storm 2, downloaded Aurkon, attempted to login, but discovered my keyboard is frozen (only in this app though), so I can't restore anything!!! All is in limbo!!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Yes i had the Distinct pleasure of this error message.
However I(we) were unable to recover the device.
This is on a Sprint Tour 9630, Tried to reinstall the OS through Desktop Software, and through the app Loader. No luck as far as that went, went to the next step and tried uninstalling and reinstalling through MCP app. Still no love!!
Took the phone to a sprint tech center where i know the guys there, they tried a few things also, after 3 hrs the service tech gave up and handed me a brand new phone.
So 1 week after gettign the tour i bricked it, awsome!
Since getting the new phone, have gone to OS 5.0 and have no issues for 3 months.

Why not just use Google Sync? It's free and easy? Plus most people already use it for email and contacts? Yeah, it doesn't backup other data but how many people actually use memo?
